An intense film about time travel, this sci-fi entry was directed by Terry Gilliam, a member of the comedy troupe Monty Python. The film stars Bruce Willis as James Cole, a prisoner of the state in the year 2035 who can earn parole if he agrees to travel back in time and thwart a devastating plague. The virus has wiped out most of the Earth's population and the remainder live underground because the air is poisonous. Returning to the year 1990, six years before the start of the plague, Cole is soon imprisoned in a psychiatric facility because his warnings sound like mad ravings. There he meets a scientist named Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), the mad son of an eminent virologist (Christopher Plummer). Cole is returned by the authorities to the year 2035, and finally ends up at his intended destination in 1996. He kidnaps Dr. Railly in order to enlist her help in his quest. Cole discovers graffiti by an apparent animal rights group called the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, but as he delves into the mystery, he hears voices, loses his bearings, and doubts his own sanity. He must figure out if Goines, who seems to be a raving lunatic, holds the key to the puzzle. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Good scifi, but terrible music.

An intricate braid of science fiction, psychology, and biology. It's a long movie with a perfect pace and once you get caught up in it, you won't know what time it is. Neither does Bruce Willis, but it's not his fault. Superb acting by the entire cast. A movie that can be watched more than once because of the subtleties in action and dialogue. A creative and artistic endeavor in every way.

Maybe it's because I waited until 2012 to watch this movie, but I just didn't see what the big deal was. Brad Pitt's acting was PHENOMENAL, but other than that, not a whole lot here. Madeleine Stowe's voice was annoying as usual and Bruce Willis was just okay.

This is a superior movie, but it's intense and complicated. Only the well-rested should tackle it. In my opinion, this was the performance of a lifetime from Bruce Willis; it shows he is capable of truly great acting.

Not quite enough Sci-Fi for my taste, but it was a good movie. Bruce Willis always delivers a watchable performance, and Brad Pitt did his usual excellent job. All in all a vry good movie...even if you aren't into Sci-Fi.

Many will probably disagree with this review and that's OK. I liked the film a lot, but I saw it less as a Sci Fi and more as a Psychodrama. The movie kept coming back to the shooting and the picture of the little boy. Over and over, and one time the little boy had a single tear in his eye. I saw this film as a dream work in which the boy made an effort to make sense of the shooting he witnessed and to turn it in to something heroic and good, whereas on the surface, the man who was shot at the airport looked like your usual average dope ridden sleaze bag, caught in the act. I thought it was a very creative effort regarding the power and complexity of the wishful mind to integrate and overcome, what was surely a terrifying experience for the boy.

I rented this based on all the good reviews it was getting. I liked the premise of the movie, but something was missing. The acting was pretty good, but it barely held my attention. It wasn't a total waste of time, but it by no means deserved 4 stars. Skip it unless you are a big Bruce Willis fan.

A lot of dry humor. The concepts of some of the technologies were interesting though jokingly expressed. Good movie for potheads or likewise I would say. The acordain also annoyed me .
