A Manhattan woman struggles with loneliness in the face of her best friend's imminent marriage in this well-received independent comedy from first-time writer-director Nicole Holofcener. Amelia (Catherine Keener) feels isolated because her friend Laura (Anne Heche) has been devoting all her time to preparing for her upcoming wedding. Desperate, she resorts to the unthinkable: dating the nerdy, Fangoria-obsessed clerk at her local video store (Kevin Corrigan). This discouraging encounter, along with some awkward conversations with her former boyfriend, leave her even more depressed and jealous of Laura's good fortune. However, Laura soon reveals that she is having her own doubts about her future. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi
Not a very good movie. Two thumbs up? That was being very kind. Nothing new here; same old formula and the movie lacks chemistry. Acting is fair at best, with just a couple of good scenes. Definitely an indi, with the director trying to learn her craft.
This movie really sucks! Please don't waste your time. It was sheer torture watching this crap. What were these actors thinking when they did this? Were they really that desperate?
Great characters with no real story to run with. This was NOT "wildly funny" as the poster states. It did have it's moments - just not enough of them. ho-hum flick.
Pay no attention to the reviews here--this was a delight virtually from start-to-finish. Very nice to see the very young Keener and Heche who are spot-on in everything they do it seems. No it's not "wildly funny" but if you like Holocener at all, this movie has heart and character to spare.
This movie is an indy film, which are usually more character-driven than action-based, so if you like movies that are well-written and beautifully acted then you'll enjoy this one. However, if you're looking for something with more comedy, then I highly recommend Bridesmaids, which recently came out on DVD. You will laugh your head off while watching this movie. It was so funny my friends and I were still talking about it days later. And, even though it's considered a "chick-flick", guys will certainly enjoy it too because it totally outshines the whole slew of guy films that have been so popular, like The Hangover and Wedding Crashers.
