Adapted from what is arguably Jane Austen's most mature and subtlest novel, Persuasion is somewhat more nuanced and restrained than the more frequently adapted Emma and Pride and Prejudice. The protagonist, Anne (Amanda Root), is, by the conventions of society, considered an old maid when she remains unmarried at 27. However, a second chance arrives when her former love, Captain Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds), returns from the Napoleonic Wars. The pair, who hardly speak throughout, are surrounded by the usual assortment of family members, friends, acquaintances, and distant relations, many of them what pass for stock characters in Austen novels. There's the social-climbing parent, the dour upper aristocrat, the scatterbrained younger relatives, and, of course, the apparently suitable suitor who turns out to be all wrong. Of course, Austen's protagonists are never dumb, but Anne, being somewhat older, is also a good deal wiser, and the characters around her accordingly take on greater dimension and subtlety. Naturally, this being an Austen story, all ends well, but the path is somewhat less straightforward than in other films adapted from her work. ~ Genevieve Williams, Rovi

I loved this movie because it was pure Austin. It was refreshing to be watching Austin performed by non-stars.

I can't tell you how many times I have watched this film--in my own collection. A dozen? Probably more. Quite simply, it is heart-stopping! Subtle but magnificent in the way it follows the relationship of Anne and Captain Wentworth. All the characters who flow around them are memorable, too. Of all the actors in this film, Ciaran Hinds is my favorite. He can never make enough movies to suit me! Jane Austen would be proud of this movie, and that's a high compliment.

I'm assuming that the book was much better than this movie. There was a lot of back story not covered that just left you confused throughout the movie. Ciaran Hinds is a great actor. And I even liked the leading lady, even though some mentioned that she was plain. Good movie, just not my favorite Jane Austin story.

I liked this one. A grand Jane Austen movie. I do so hate how they treated Fannie. Bravo for her though to rise above them all, and show them that she was so much better than they. They all had that need to speak of one another when their lives weren't so wonderful. Unfortunately, things are still the same in the upper classes. I've felt like Fannie for years. Good show for a fuzzy slipper day when one wants to relax and see how history doth repeats itself

This is a must see for any Jane Austen fan. The story accurately depicts the time frame of society in 19th century England; from the "airs" of the aristocracy to the lives of the everyday "common" people, who lived fuller lives by merely being themselves. Anne was a warm and giving woman, who, though she had turned away from her hearts desire due to her family's position at 19, never gave up on her true love, Captain Wentworth. And he never gave up on her. A true romance. Dana W.

One of the best renditions of a Jane Austen story into a movie. Great scenery and excellent acting as well. Recommend viewing, especially by Jane Austen fans.
