Director Robert Aldrich took what he considered a hopelessly old-fashioned script by Lukas Heller and Nunnally Johnson and fashioned The Dirty Dozen into one of MGM's biggest moneymakers of the 1960s--and the sixth highest-grossing film in the studio's history. Lee Marvin plays Major Reisman, assigned to coordinate a suicide mission on a French chateau held by top Nazi officers. Since no "normal" GI can be expected to volunteer for this mission, Reisman is compelled to draw his personnel from a group of military prisoners serving life sentences. This "dirty dozen" includes a sex pervert (Telly Savalas), a psycho (John Cassavetes), a retarded killer (Donald Sutherland), and the equally malevolent Charles Bronson, Trini Lopez, Jim Brown, and Clint Walker. On the dim promise of receiving pardons if they survive, the criminals undergo a brutal training program, then are marched behind enemy lines dressed as Nazi soldiers, the better to overtake the chateau and kill everyone in it--including the innocent wives and mistresses of the German officers. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Lee Marvin, Telly Savales, Charles Bronson, Sam Peckinpah, that's all i need to know. To top it off, they headin' behind enemy lines to kill as many Nazi's they can get their hands on. Did i mention that the dozen from the name refers to 12 military prisoners who's only other choice is the hangman. A great movie because it shows the nasty side of war without preaching it and it also shows the humor of the men. Recomended for any war/action buff and don't worry it was made in the '60's so it ain't gory.

The Dirty Dozen is one of the all-time great slam-bang action movies, with a cast the likes of whom we will never see again. Lee Marvin is perfect in his role as Major Reisman, as is every other member of the 'Dozen' - particularly John Cassavettes as Franco. Witty dialog and solid action and acting. Three thumbs up!

One of the great war movies of all time. Lee Marvin was the kind of Major you expect from our military. My 12 yr. old son loved the part when the Dirty Dozen captured the Colonel's staff during the war games. Charles Bronson was great as the German officer inside the Chateau.

One of my favorite War-action movie. There was one funny scene when Donald Sutherland played as General. This a classic movie I wanted to keep as collection.

My favorite character was JOHN CASSAVETES. I am glad the ending was left in. I gives a 1960's version of how ugly war is. Telly was good as psycho s*x offender! Lee is very believeable as the man in charge. Too bad its not a true story. A must see. If not then you are not a "reel" movie person.

A Classic! Others have reviewed the movie, but I'd like to add comments about the special features disc of the 2-disc special edition. First, you have to order the 2nd disc separately by clicking on "see all versions." But it's well worth it -- the documentary regarding members of the original "Filthy Thirteen" is terrific. One of the surviving members tells fabulous stories. The 2nd disc also contains the 1985 sequel The Next Mission, which is just barely worth your time -- it can only be described as "lame." And why didn't they edit out the obvious pauses where the tv commercials had been before putting this on dvd?

Great cast, classic war movie, love Lee Marvin, but in reality only mediocre acting and direction. Players were stiff - like they were instructed to put their feet on the masking tape marks on a stage rather than naturally go where their feet and the character took them. And some of the dying scenes (Donald Sutherland's, for one) were so overacted and dramatic they actually made me laugh out loud. One of the extra features - the "making of the movie" - that has the cast bopping around London is a classic with the fashions of the day and the actors ogling the girls on the street.
