The feature film debut of Scottish director Danny Boyle was a dark, hip, Generation X comedy about a trio of Edinburgh roommates whose narcissistic greed fuels murder and betrayal. Boisterous journalist Alex (Ewan McGregor), flirtatious doctor Juliet (Kerry Fox), and meek accountant David (Christopher Eccleston) possess very different personalities, but the roommates are bonded in mutual, self-absorbed cynicism. Seeking a fourth boarder to share the rent for their stylish flat, they cruelly dismiss several candidates before settling on Hugo (Keith Allen), whose air of detachment meets the roommates' standard of coolness. Hugo's reserve masks criminal involvement, however, as the roommates discover when they find him dead in bed from a drug overdose, with a valise containing enormous amounts of cash. Their nascent greed overwhelms them, and the trio dismembers and buries Hugo, stealing his money. Only David, who understands finance, seems to realize that someone's eventually going to seek out such a large sum. As both drug dealers and police get closer to figuring out the friends' secret, shy, nerdy David becomes violently paranoid, while Juliet's allegiance switches back and forth between her roommates. Boyle teamed subsequently with producer Andrew Macdonald and screenwriter John Hodge on several high-profile films. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Great movie. Very dark and disturbing. Three friends rent a room to a guy who dies with a suitcase full of cash. Instead of going to the police they dispose of the body (by sawing it to pieces) and keep the money for themselves. Like most of Boyle's movies this isn't for everyone. Very cold, very dark, and also very funny... but a different kind of funny. If you like "Fargo" and "Blood Simple", you'll like this.

I really enjoyed this movie but can't explain why. It wasn't that great of a plot but yet it held my attention from beginning to end. I think I really enjoyed the 3 main characters especially a young Ewan McGregor. This movie was different and I think that is what made is so good.

If you don't like or understand British films, don't watch this. This movie is brilliantly written and acted. Ewan McGregor at his finest with his hallmark grin and laddish ways. A must see for anyone with a good sense of dark humour and a bit of cop-on.

This is a very different film, meaning I'm not surprised it was not a huge blockbuster. It is interesting to watch, sometimes gruesome. Ewan is good, as always!

a beautifully done movie and a great story and good character development and a great example of film noir.

At points felt like a scottish version of 'Very Bad Things' only not as tight. I was excited by the first 10 minutes. I like the "idea" of this movie, but i think it failed in its execution....I probably won't watch it again.

If you need to feel empathy with the characters this movie isn't for you. That being said in this very dark comedy a trio of self involved roommates encounter some cruel twists of fate. Their greed overcomes their good sense with disastrous homocidal results. As Shakespeare said "What a tangeled web we weave when first we practice to deceive."

Greed is a compelling issue in many great movies. You don't have to like British films to find a common ground with the plot of "Shallow Grave". It is a must see, and one you will be referencing shortly after.

Though a little gruesome in some scenes, the movie held my attention. I wasn't sure who was doing what to whom at times; but that was resolved as the movie progressed. Human nature was expressed at its fullest.

After a series of British films that I hated (this being the latest), I've decided that I cannot stand British film. My friends were telling me to see 'Train spotting' and I HATED IT. I got this film at the library for free and within minutes, I knew I was going to hate it -I did. I couldn't finish it. If you have a history of liking British film and comedy, you might like this. I'm glad I got it for free and was glad I didn't waste any more of my life finishing it (like I did Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy).
