Laurence Fishburne and Ellen Barkin star in this complex tale of former C.I.A. agents who now specialize in freelance espionage. As the film opens, Nelson Crowe (Fishburne) is being interviewed for a position with the Grimes Organization, which focuses on industrial espionage. He is hired by Margaret Wells (Barkin), who then takes Crowe to her boss, Grimes (Frank Langella). Grimes and Wells visit a man named Walter Curl (Spalding Gray) to tell him that they can bribe a state judge so that Curl's company doesn't have to pay a $25 million fine for the toxic poisoning of some children. The judge himself (David Ogden Stiers) is deep in gambling debts. Meanwhile, Wells aligns herself with Crowe and tries to convince him that the two of them could do away with Grimes and take over his entire organization. The plot thickens from there, with several surprises. The first-time original screenplay is by famous crime writer Ross Thomas, ~ Don Kaye, Rovi
Sizzling!! Some very daring footage for an American film. Ellen Barkin is fearless with some very very seductive scenes. Good plot, well acted. Not everyones cup of tea, but I liked it.
There is no doubt that this was one of the worst films I've ever watched..what a
waste of good talent..most of the acting was overdone and unreal to say the
least..there is no story that's understandable or creditable..overacting and
over sexed..especially Ellen Barkin''s role..I'll never understand why such
good talent would waste their time on such trash..next time I'll be more careful
to read the reviews...1/2 star for no attempt!!!
Although I normally don't comment much on actors, I really think Lawrence Fishburne could be one of the better black actors out there. The role he played in this film kept me looking for him to do well for all those years between this and "Akeelah and the Bee".--- He's got it in him to be great, and he shows it with a realisitc depiction of a former intel operative that finds himself sliding in the wrong side of things. Surrounded by much less realistic roles, this movie does not tend to win over with audiences. --- Then again, any movie that shows a black man with a white woman does not tend to go over well.
I did not see the one with Laurence Fishburne and Ellen Barkin so I can't discuss this one.
But I did see the one with Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock and it was very entertaining. Chris Rock did a good job as a set of twins. His change from a vulgar street working hustler to a refined, educated spy was surprisingly good.
Anthony Hopkins was great as the crusty retired CIA agent doing freelance spy work. The post assignment meeting of the two was very well done. Just enough sentimentality.
