Black Rain (1989)
Member Rating:
Under scrutiny by his superiors for allegedly dipping into confiscated drug money, New York vice cop Michael Douglas can expect no sympathy from his ex-wife, who is gouging him for alimony. Douglas gets a chance to redeem himself when he is assigned to escort Japanese mob boss Yusaku Matsuda back to his own country to stand trial. Upon arriving in Osaka, Douglas and his partner Andy Garcia are tricked into releasing their prisoner. Now on the outs with both the American and Japanese police authorities, Douglas is forced to deal with the Yakuza-the Japanese equivalent of the Mafia-to retrieve the elusive Matsuda. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this movie, michael douglas is a cop that isn't afraid to bend the rules a little and hates "suits". This includes smacking around restrained prisoners and using racial slurs. Most of the movie takes place in japan, where he battles the yakuza mafia.

Cop movies...seen them nothing new...Until this movie. This was very well done, well paced and very well acted and directed.Ken Takakura who was amazing in The Yakuza ( another great film) is fantastic and plays the good cop to Michael Douglas's rogue cop to perfection. You will hate suits after this movie.

As with most 80's genre films...if one doesn't know much about the period and wasn't around, they probably won't be able to appreciate all the raw nuances of the storyline, the sets or the acting. Anyone who knows, knows that everything in the movie was cutting edge at the time right down to the airplanes they flew on. Douglas was a semi-young cop with long hair, riding one of the fastest motorcycles at the time, in a world that was just beginning to go global.

It is very difficult to like the protagonist in this Ridley Scott buddy-cop vehicle. In fact, Michael Douglas is quite unattractive, and Ken Takakura steals the show, with a young Andy Garcia taking the sidekick fall at the hour mark. Excellent locations in Japan and in Napa Valley in lieu of Japan, good action sequences, forced romantic interest, and generally weak musical score (very 80's). Nevertheless, an entertaining look back into the 80's just before the Japanese banking gridlock hit for those with the stomach and patience for it.

This is a great crime drama flick combining a gritty police story with solid action. michael Douglas plays a burnt out, corrupt NYPD detective who rediscovers his integrity and purpose while pursuing a Yakuza enforcer in the land of the Rising Sun. Character development is above average, the film is not limited by its era (release date) as the plot dynamics are universal. Ridley Scott's direction and production values are great as usual. Altogether, this is one of my favorite Michael Douglas films and certainly one of the better "culture clash" films of any era. If you liked Rising Sun, you'll probably enjoy Black Rain.
