Warren Beatty directed and starred in this big-budget action comedy featuring Chester Gould's square-jawed, two-dimensional comic strip detective. Ruthless gangster Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino) touches off a gang war against underworld boss Lips Manlis (Paul Sorvino), with Big Boy and his minions rubbing out enough of Manlis's goons (along with Manlis himself) to take over his nightclub, and a healthy percentage of the city's criminal activities in the process. Caprice also gains proprietary rights to Manlis's girlfriend, nightclub chanteuse Breathless Mahoney (Madonna). Big Boy's next move to is unite the rest of the city's crooks under his command; this wave of corruption attracts the attention of lawman Dick Tracy, who is determined to smash Caprice's criminal network once and for all. As Tracy plots to put Big Boy behind bars where he belongs, Breathless uses her considerable charms in an attempt to sway Tracy from the path of righteousness; this causes no small amount of anxiety for Tracy's long-suffering female companion, Tess Trueheart (Glenne Headly), and the street-smart kid (Charlie Korsmo) they've been keeping an eye on. The various bad guys, heavily made up to resemble Gould's cartoon characters (though Beatty is not made up to resemble Tracy), include Dustin Hoffman, James Caan, R.G. Armstrong, and William Forsythe. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Great movie. It truely captures the whole comic strip feel. Good story, action, and music. The acting was very good (excluding Madonna). Definitly a movie thats entertaining and fun.

This was a well made movie. Great for the whole family. I loved the colors that they used to capture the feel of the sunday comic strip. If you like the comic strip you must see this move. The acting is great and the Characters are awesome.

This movie was created to make the comics come to life. The colors in the film stand out the most as they are pretty basic to distinguish itself from other movies, very unique. The characters were well created in looks, charisma, and personality. There was something different about each character and you can really get into the main ones. It was a fun ride with lots of old fashion Batman & Robin fight scenes without the "Biff" "Pow" "Sock" splattered on the screen, car chases and 1920s Chicago style shootouts. Fun movie.

Review 113: from Comic strip to Radio&TV show to serials, Tracy's years are put to good use for making this colorful film full of goons made up accurate to their cartoon faces and exciting characters.

This movie was cool when I was a kid. I was looking forward to watching it after 20 years and then it was kinda lame.

A truly artistic piece that invokes almost a Tim Burtonesque feel. The primary colors in the palette and the make up effects really invoke the feel of the comics, and the plot keeps one interested and involved. You get to see all the original Tracy characters excellently portrayed. I wish the performance by Madonna were a little more energetic despite the script... but it is totally in character and shows off her assets excellently. All in all a must see for any movie afficianado.

Not that entertaining. As I am a student of film, I gave it 3 1/2 stars for it research potential, but if I were to review it on entertainment alone, I'd probably take off a star. P.S. James Caan makes a small cameo (probably as a favor to Beatty) and I've yet to see him in a role I haven't loved. :^) ..P.P.S. if your a stickler for good acting -steer clear of this!!!!!! It is shameless.

One of my favorite movies. Timeless. I like the comic book styling. Strong character-type performances.
