A bright young African-American boy attempts to survive life in the city by acting as an errand boy for a drug dealer in this thoughtful, sharply plotted drama. Known as Fresh, the young man must use his delivery jobs to support himself and his troubled sister, receiving nothing from his distant, alcoholic father but the occasional chess lesson. His intelligence and quiet determination serve him well, as he wins the trust of his employer and settles into an unpleasant but survivable routine. Even this small comfort disappears, however, when Fresh accidentally witnesses the killing of a classmate and becomes a potential target himself. Forced into an impossible situation, he puts his experience and strategic ability to good use, developing a tricky plan to protect his own life and defeat the killers. First-time director Boaz Yakin emphasizes restraint and realism, presenting potentially sensationalistic material with a minimum of violence and flash. Instead, attention is placed on the strong, layered performances, particularly Sean Nelson as Fresh and Samuel L. Jackson as his embittered father. While some have questioned the film's treatment of inner city life, the film was generally acclaimed, thanks to its seriousness and complexity. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

Fresh is a drug runner in a very bad part of New York. Fresh is a master at chess and quite smart. He is well liked and trusted by all of the big dealers and when they start causing problems in his life he gets even by being extremely smart and using his chess skills. The film starts slow but it gets better fast. I wouldn't recommend it for children.

The plot behind Fresh is very good. Fresh has been running drugs and uses his association with diffrent dealers to turn them against each other and thus saves himself and his sister. It is entertaining.

This is an excellent, near flawless movie that was overlooked by me because it got caught in the oversaturation of hood movies in the early nineties. This stands out because it is an intelligent film that exposes the viewer to the problems a child of the ghetto faces, but then resolves itself with one of the most moving endings I have ever enjoyed. As a CLEARLY marked R-rated movie about a child dealing with drug dealers, it's a shame that other reviewers in here are giving this a low rating for its content as if they had expected a Fat Albert cartoon. If you don't think this is a realistic portrayal of a child living in the ghetto, Id like for you guys to look up Robert "Yummy" Sandifer's story.

Started watching the movie. Wife & I decided it was to rough for us. Next day we decided to watch some more and maybe learn something from it. Watched until the pregnant women tried to trade her body for some dope and we gave up on the movie in disgust.

Fresh is a rough inner city story of youth with few options but Fresh's innate intelligence and chess game savvy turn things to his advantage. A story of grit and courage. Good acting by Fresh. Sad to think any children have to grow up in this environment and with these choices.

I'm not going to make this a long comment, but I just want to say that I did not like this movie because of the excessive use of profanity. Not only was there alot of profanity, but coming out of the mouth of babes. It gave a negative outlook on black men and young black boys. I would not buy this movie nor would I reccommend it to anyone. This is just my opinion. Thank You.

After reading the cover review, I thought this sounded wonderful. Boy goes from Lower class living, drug dealing, to hero. No, no, no. The language is, of course, coarse - VERY coarse. The writer is a one-word-phenom. Unfortunately, if you aren't born and bred into that culture, none of the actors words are recognizable as actual English, and the story line gets lost trying to figure out what they are saying. I found it very sad, unpleasant and boring. Don't bother.
