A scathing look at Britain in the post-Thatcher era, Mike Leigh's Naked stars David Thewlis as Johnny, an unemployed layabout with a philosophical bent and a nasty edge. In the opening scene, he's committing rape, and before the credits even roll, he's also stolen a car to flee from Manchester to the London home of an old girlfriend (Lesley Sharp). The film's loose, sprawling narrative follows Johnny as he randomly makes his way through the streets of London, encountering a homeless Scottish couple, a nightwatchman and a series of women whom he charms and discards. He lives defiantly outside of the system, refusing to conform to the demands of anyone (including himself). ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi
After reading the horrible reviews for this movie I felt I had to give some input here. I saw this movie years ago when it first came out & although I haven't seen it in years I recall being very impressed with it. Yes there is violence & all sorts of sexual degradation but that's what the movie is about - a bunch of lost f'd up people. Although the title character is a seemingly repulsive human being, he shows humility, caring & insight. I thought the dialoge between him & the security guard was brilliant. This movie displays broken human beings but within their nakedness they are just human. In fact I think I'll order this movie & watch it again. I suggest you watch the movie & formulate your own opinion.
Mike Liegh's masterwork Naked is a brilliant film. Put simply, we all come here naked and alone. We spend our time trying to connect with others, to change and grow. To do this we must expose our true self to each other. The main characters philosophy is that we never change and it is in our nature to hide who we are. Everyone he meets is stuck in some sort of self desructive behavior they repeat. His ex lets him in her life again even though she knows better. Her friend hooks up with him and the rich guy-she has a pattern of choosing abusive partners. His rebirth when he is beaten and crawls out of the wet alley makes you think he'll change yet we leave him right where we found him, stealing and running away to start his cycle all over again. Considering most dialogue was improv'd and it made the Criterion Collection, Naked is worth a 2nd look.
This scenes in this movie did not flow well for the audience. There would be a cutaway to another subplot and when the movie came back to the original plot it did not pick up where it was before the cutaway which leaves you wondering how the characters got to the new location. The lines of Johnny where extensive and brilliantly done, However, there were times when I wanted to tell him to shut up as he rambled unnecessarily.
This movie was a complete waste of 131 minutes. When I read the negative reviews before watching this movie I thought that the people who reviewed didnt like foriegn films that are slow with action but great into character development. I MISJUDGED those who took the time to review this waste of celluloid. The characters were poorly developed, storyline jumpy and difficult to follow, and overall even the footage of the movie other than matching the grainy look with the roughness of the (main?) character was poorly shot as well. Then the movie sporadically adds other characters as to drive the plot? of the movie - but it was mainly a waste of time.
One would hope there being enlightened would lead to good decisions. This doesn't happen here. The result is a film that is bad and boring with characters who are pathetic and unlikable.
I was hoping this film would be good. It is not. Don't rent it. It is full of degrading violence against women.
The whole plot bombed. Characters are way off from development. The ending is senseless as the beginning of the film.
The concept of this film could have been okay but would have been better if it was edited, re-written and cut out the junk such as senseless bump-ins with strangers.
I am embrassed of Mike Leigh for making such a crappy film.
Spending the 2 hours to watch this movie was painful...it had no flow or composition. Who was that snooty rich guy...what was his role? Why did the whores pop up randomly? Nothing made sense at all...I even felt kind of retarded for having to turn on the English subtitles in order to understand the English. If you see this movie after reading this, you are more retarded then me!!
