All Mine to Give (1956)
Member Rating:
Glynis Johns and Cameron Mitchell are top-billed in All Mine to Give, but they're out of the picture halfway through. Johns and Mitchell play a Scottish couple, Mamie and Robert, living in the American wilderness of the mid-19th century. Robert dies, whereupon Mamie takes on the responsibility of raising their six children. And when she succumbs to illness, it is the oldest child, Robbie (Rex Thompson, who'd previously played Louis Leonowens in The King And I), who takes on the challenge of finding homes for his siblings on Christmas Day. Based on a true story, All Mine to Give has heart-tugging potential, but the script isn't up to the performances. One year before its American release, the film was distributed in Great Britain under the title The Day They Gave Babies Away. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I too was feeling somewhat sentimental and wanted to see this movie again. It's been over 25 years since I last saw it and was surprised that it had been converted to DVD. After 25 years I still get a knot in my throat just thinking how touching this film is. These were really gifted and talented child actors. Glynnis and Cameron who played the parents were not in the movie very long but were brilliant . I always wondered why these actors never got beyond the 'supporting actor' stage in their careers. If you can find the film just buy and show it to your families at Christmas and Thanksgiving get togethers. In this high tech world we have forgotten how precious family is. After viewing I promise you will never forget.

I have seen this movie as a kid in the 50s and it was a tear-jerker. Story line is simple, 6 kids living a new found life, only to lose their parents one after another. As the movie details indicated, this is based on a true story. I would have only wished there was a follow-up movie to see how the siblings fared over the years. Now, trying to reminiscent my younger years, I wanted to see this movie again. Not sure who has the DVD out there, but it was listed as "Very Long Wait" and now it is "Unavailable".
