A post-apocalyptic future becomes the setting for pitch black humor in this visually intricate French comedy. The action takes place within a single apartment complex, which is owned by the same man that operates the downstairs butcher shop. It's a particularly popular place to live, thanks to the butcher's uncanny ability to find excellent cuts of meat despite the horrible living conditions outside. The newest building superintendent, a former circus clown, thinks he has found an ideal living situation. All that changes, however, when he discovers the true source of the butcher's meat, and that he may be the next main course. This dark tale is played out in a brilliantly designed, glorious surreal alternate world reminiscent of the works of director Terry Gilliam, who co-presented the film's American release. Like Gilliam, co-directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro hail from an animation background, and have a fondness for extravagant visuals, absurdist plot twists, and a sense of humor that combines sharp satire with broad slapstick and gross-out imagery. This mixture may displease the weak of stomach, but those attuned to the film's sensibility will be delighted by the obvious technical virtuosity and wicked sense of humor. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

A brilliant movie. Apocalyptic yes but the apocalypse could arrive as soon as tomorrow. The movie has a retro feel to it. Movies that include shots in the sewers of Paris always do. One of the joys of the DVD is watching the feature that shows the making of the movie. it demonstrates what a great movie you can make with a little tiny set and imaginative camera placement. Not for the squeamish. i watched the movie with friends and I served dinner before hand. We had escargot (snails). Watch the movie and you'll understand.

Great weird movie with colorful characters and dark humor. The music is particularly haunting.

Same director that did Amelie & City of Lost Children - two favorites of mine. This one though I did not enjoy as much. As always though, the way it was filmed and directed (and written) all things I DID appreciate (unique and bizarro as always) BUT? ..serving humans up as entrees I guess just ain't for me.

This is an art film, and it is FRENCH, so it is not to everyone's taste. Shot in sepia tones to promote atmosphere it depicts a post apocalypse society struggling to eat. There is an underground faction that equate to the VEGANS of today. Many reviews are right on about the characters, story etc. so I won't repeat. Just mention 2 neglected minor characters, the small boys, wickedly funny and right on about doing all kinds of mischief to amuse themselves. Re; the negative reviews, no one has to love all the movies, but you should give this one a chance. Very dark comedy. Cf. Amilie, Very Long Engagement, City of Lost Children, Brazil.

The perfect movie. Honestly-- the music guides the story, the acting is flavorful, the story is interesting, and, because it is post apocalyptic, the zest of humor added makes it superb.

Reminded me of the carnival ride Tunnel of Love. What people do to survive in difficult times. I watched the whole movie. Definitely different, I liked it.

Some visually stunning moments of amusement & repulsion. This is one of the darkest comedies I have ever seen. I'm not sure that cannibalism is my taste, excuse the pun here. But Jeunet & Caro put together an unpredictable, whimsical, somewhat positive movie among the dripping undergrounds, the slimy snails, the bulging eyeballs, and make shift scuba gear, among the greedy and destitute within a futuristic urban apartment setting. Definitely not a movie for those of delicate sensibilities. Seeing this movie once, will be enough of it for me.
