Laurence Fishburne plays no-nonsense LAPD narc Russell Stevens, Jr., who has worked all his life to expunge the memory of his dope-addict father, whom he saw die in a liquor-store robbery. DEA agent Jerry Carver (Charles Martin Smith) orders Stevens to work as an undercover operative on a major case. The cop is to pose as a dealer in order to get the goods on South American drug lord. Stevens is so convincing as a dealer, that he fast works his way up through the ranks and gains the trust of lawyer and narcotics dealer David Jason (Jeff Goldblum) and his sinister associates, all lackeys to the kingpin who is the target of Stevens' assignment. Through a series of fantastic but credible circumstances, Stevens eliminates the lower echelon, getting closer to his quarry, but in the process he finds himself so deep into the sinister and seductive world of the drug trade that he may never get out. In a surprise move, and just when he is about to bring the ringleader down, the DEA pulls the plug on his assignment, because the top dealer, an influential Latin American politician, may someday be useful to the State Department. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum will blow you away. Fishburne's character is an undercover narc who descends into the pit, playing his role to the hilt and beyond. Sanctioned and pushed beyond his moral limits by his government handler, he cracks. Goldblum is a likable, psycopathic lawyer in the drug trade, and an intermediate target on the way to the bigshots, yet becomes Fishburnes best friend. This film is dark and gritty and hard as nails. Not for the faint of heart, it is a must-see film. Great acting, directing, photography and editing.

Don't waste your time, especially if you have something important to do like trimming your nose hairs. It's a third rate movie with a cast that's no better. I think it was made only to introduce Laurence Fishburne to a potential movie audience. Poor plot and worse acting. I quit about 2/3 of the way through. It gets one star only because the disc wasn't damaged.

Laurence Fishburne , was a great central character playing his role to a "T" , and Jeff Goldblum gave an excellent performance also, the two worked together well. this film portrays the old adage " if you put a clean fish in dirty water eventually you will have a dirty fish"....human nature!

I thought the movie could have been so much more. Acting was good, but something never got off the ground. Would not recommend this movie, but if you do make sure your wide awake, 'cause it will put you to sleep!

This one film had me waiting for Fishbourne to give me more of its quality for years. Too bad I had to wait all the way till "Akeelah and the Bee".--- The role of the undercover narcotics officer was well done, although the film takes it a bit too far for it to be realisitc. However, it does truthfully show the temptations that a narc cop has to deal with and how easily a cop could slip into the other side of the game (and do well at it). The pace and tone were just right, and the story was pretty good.

I didn't find this to be a bad film, but considering all of the great stuff I had heard about it, I was a tad dissapointed. I think part of it is not even the film's fault, but since this film came out there have been a lot of film's very similar to it. Donnie Brasco is one that comes to mind. But it's not like it was original in the first place. I'm torn. Fishburne is great; Goldblum is okay, a tad on the cartoonish side, but when is he not? I can't quite reccomed this film but it has so many fans, if you're into this type of film you should probably give it a shot.
