Imagine: John Lennon - The Definitive Film Portrait (1988) Reviews

Imagine: John Lennon - The Definitive Film Portrait (1988)
Member Rating:
The personal film archives of Yoko Ono were utilized for this feature-length documentary on the life of John Lennon. Predictably, it downplays Lennon's association with the Beatles and concentrates on his years with Ono. The film spends a lot of time recounting Lennon's anti-war activities, highlighted by a confrontation on a talk show hosted by conservative cartoonist Al Capp. The title of the documentary is, of course, taken from Lennon's idyllic ballad about a world free of hatred and discord. Imagine: John Lennon is a reverent but ultimately depressing chronicle of an artist who died the untimeliest of deaths. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I seen this movie in the theater. It is by far the best movie about John Lennon I have ever seen. There are interviews with Julian Lennon, Sean Lennon,John's first wife and many more. You can really get a feeling of who John Lennon was and is. I own this movie on beta max tape. When i heard it was coming out on DVD i cried. This movie is that good. A must see for every one. Peace and love James G. ps. See you at Beatlefest!!!

I thought this was an excellent film about a very vulnerable "human being", with flaws like us all, and demons that lurked with him growing up from his childhood abandonments of his mother and father - -his anger, his warm heart, and his compassion for humanity. This film showed "the man" - - his legendary greatness along with his many setbacks in life. I really thought this was a very fair dipiction of the complicated life of my hero: John Winston Lennon.

I did not know much about Lennon before I watched this film. Mainly that he was an ex-Beatle, that he was married to Ono and that he wrote one of my favorite songs of all time "Imagine". Out of curiosity I watched this and now i am 100% a Lennon fan. check it out, you will not waste your time.

This is an exceptional documentary in that it contains so much actual recorded footage of its subject while not being the public persona and just being himself. I made a really fascinating discovery in one scene where John is in his studio recording a song for one of his biggest albums. In the middle of the song his sheet music slips and he has to grab it before it falls off of the music stand. The sound of the paper rustling and the music stand shaking can be heard on the actual recording released on the album. I think it was on the song, "Jealous Guy." I always thought it was someone setting down a tamborine in the background -messing up. But, it was John nearly dropping his music. It was weird to see it actually happen on this video and recognize the sound and see where it came from. Just an odd aside. Enjoyable documentary.

This is also a very good movie, but I enjoyed "The U.S. vs. John Lennon" more. Because it looks at the political side of Lennon, and the Anti War movment, in much more detail.

It was good for the most part. But they worked so hard to avoid the topic of his murder it left a weird hole in the story at the end.
