Sidney Lumet provides another of his film adaptations of Broadway successes -- in this case Ira Levin's 1978 clever Broadway murder mystery that starred John Wood in a triumphant turn as down-on-his-luck playwright Sidney Bruhl. Wood's brittle airiness is replaced in the film version by Michael Caine's smoldering bitterness. Sidney Bruhl is a successful writer of Broadway mystery plays who was at one time considered the Neil Simon of Broadway mystery writers. Unfortunately, Bruhl is now struggling to live up to his own reputation, suffering through a series of four consecutive flops. But then Bruhl comes upon the manuscript of a brilliant suspense drama written by unknown writer Clifford Anderson (Christopher Reeve). Bruhl, desperate for a hit play, invites Clifford to come to see him, telling him that he is interested in collaborating with him on the play. Actually, Bruhl plans to murder Clifford and pass off Clifford's play as his own. What Bruhl doesn't know, however, is that Clifford has some surprise plot points of his own up his sleeve. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

It was not until I watched the movie a second time did I get all the nuances going on and double roles the characters were playing. A good movie if watched with two wonderful actors especially seeing Reeves acting the character he did. I am buying the movie as we lost Reeves in the prime of his life and a good movie for my library...Jeff in Bham, Al

I have never seen the play but the film was enjoyable due to the two leads (Caine & Superm...Reeves). If you are looking for twists and turns in 80s fashion, pick it up. -Stone

I found this movie to be highly entertaining, and extremly suspenseful! It's full of obscure plot turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. I would recommend this to anyone who will enjoy a strangly funny murder mystery!

The best thriller you'll see! Brilliant Story & Performance that will keep you glued to your seat. Caine and Reeves at their best!

A good plot, but even the talents of Michael Caine doesn't save this from dragging, even with the multiple twists in the story. Hint: If you're going to make a movie from a play, make a movie, don't just put the play on in front of a camera.

This movie had alot of twists and turns in it. Them planning on killing the wife was at best a brilliant fore thought for Micheal Caine. I was not impressed with Christopher Reeves character except that he was, "Man In Boots" (funny to me and my friend). It had alot of sharp witt and undertones (surprised the hell out of me when they kissed OMG). Overall it was a good movie. I do wish someone would pick me up from where they dropped me off from though...

We finally gave up and started watching it on fast forward! As some other reviewer said, we felt like we were still watching a play as the dialogue just didn't work for a movie. Whomever said this was "...hilarious..." and "...a diabolical comdey thriller..." must not get out of the house much!

After falling asleep waiting for something to happen, we turned it off.

We watched this with our three teenage sons. None of us laughed, especially not when Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve exchanged a lip lock.
