Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam (1987)
Member Rating:
Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam was first telecast April 3, 1988, over the HBO cable service. Based on the book of the same name, the program is devoted to poignant recitations of letters to and from American participants of the Vietnam war. The letters are heard over images culled from news footage, home movies and still photography, with contemporary music added to put things in the proper historical context. The 2-hour film, featuring readings from various well-known actors (see cast list), was a co-production involving Bill Couturie, a previous Emmy winner for Vietnam Requiem, and the Vietnam Veterans Ensemble Theatre Company. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a film to be watched together with "Last Letters Home", which focused on the Iraq war. The experiences of the military fighting in Vietnam, and the effect on the families and the nation, unfold as the letters from the Vietnam troops are read. Every American should watch this film.

This is a very touching and heart felt movie. Some say that it’s the actors reading the letters that makes it but I think this movie would have the same impact if the letters was read by random people pick off the street. This movie captures the Vietnam Experience from those who was really there and not second hand clouded information from historians or teachers. For anyone to young to know about the Vietnam War or for those who wants a greater insight into the mind set of a soldier in Vietnam this is a MUST SEE MOVIE!

POWERFUL movie - a MUST SEE ! The concept of having actors read letters from everyday folks - during a critical time in America - is truly powerful. Touching letters make this movie very heart-wrenching.

Absolutely wonderful. Thought provoking, emotional and moving. A perfect film to depict the true nature of the war without the "hollywood effect". We forget these are very young men that fight in these conflicts and the effects on them and their families are lasting and devasting as is depicting in the very last letter. Beautifully done.

In early 1980, I became very passionate about the Vietnam Veterans plight in every way, From their reception by the American people (lead a good deal by college professors; intellect?) to health care and treatment (our government) for them. All to which there was much negative feedback toward those ideas. Anyway, this movie should drive home and enlighten us all ! A great documentary.

I was reading some of the reviews on this movie and was very disturbed that someone was upset about some nudity. This is NOT what this movie is about! How do we forget the thousands of 18 year olds (including my husband) that went thru a living hell to come home to being spit upon????? I sooo sympathize with the families that have loved ones in Iraq and am glad that people are welcoming them home with open arms for a war that they didn't start. This is one GREAT movie and should be seen in all schools in the country.

a bit one-sided with anti-war sentiment... still worth watching... very similar to Good Morning Vietnam

A great look at the heroism and heartache of the Viet Nam war. A must see for any history buff.

We had watched the Last Letters from Iraq and were expecting the same format much to our disappointment. The letters weren't bothersome, it was the nudity! We're watching along and there's some soldier standing in a river or something buck naked holding a gun, frontal view. That wasn't the only thing, the language had some very strong moments as well. Not suitable for children.
