Grieving over the death of their son, a married couple decide to take a long yachting trip for relaxation's sake. Their journey takes a dark turn, however, when they rescue a young man from a drifting vessel. The couple soon discover that the other ship's crew had been brutally murdered by their new passenger, and find themselves in a battle of wits against this violent sociopath. Interestingly, a previous attempt had been made at adapting the novel that inspired this film by none other than Orson Welles; footage from his unfinished version, known as "The Deep," can be seen in the documentary Orson Welles: The One-Man Band. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

Not a bad story, but not a great one either. Suspense yes. Acting ok. A good cast. That is what made this movie work. All 3 of these stars went on to do greater movies later.

Nicole Kidman was very young when she made this movie. I loved her curly hair. Don't think she had to get so intimate with the guy, though. It seemed like an opportunity for her character to do it without her husband around. That's just my opinion. It was suspenseful.

A couple at sea, seeking solitude and calm after a tragedy strikes them on land. Billy Zane who is terrific in this role floats to them from another sinking mysterious schooner. Sam Neill befriends lonely man and rushes to investiagte his dying schooner leaving Billy alone with Nicole. Well, no good deed goes unpunished... Very tense drama and the old story the 'devil is always so handsome", Suspense at sea.. alone adrift ...dead calm

one of the worst movies i have ever seen. the movie is ridiculous, full of goofs that anyone can catch, and could have been ended by nicole kidmans character about 50 times throughout the movie. DO NOT RENT! DO NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCES OF THIS MOVIE!
