Dead and Buried (1981) Reviews

Dead and Buried (1981)
Member Rating:
Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, the screenwriters behind the highly successful Alien, turned their attention to earthbound terrors with this creepy horror tale. Dead and Buried focuses on Dan Gillis (James Farentino), a man who has recently returned to his hometown of Potter's Bluff to be its sheriff. His job becomes difficult when a series of strangers who visit Potter's Bluff begin dying in violent and mysterious ways. To make matters worse, his wife, Janet (Melody Anderson), has begun to act strangely, taking an odd interest in voodoo and acting like she might be having an affair. As the murder victims pile up, Gillis discovers that all his troubles have an occult origin that has to do with the town's elderly mortician, Dobbs (Jack Albertson, in his final feature film role). Gillis gets to the bottom of the mystery, only to discover that the truth is much worse than he imagined. Despite effective direction and solid acting, Dead and Buried got lost in the shuffle of the early '80s horror boom and failed to click with the movie-going public. However, it later gained an audience via home video and cable and remains a minor cult favorite today thanks to its singular blend of creepy atmosphere and gruesome shocks. ~ Donald Guarisco, Rovi

I never heard of Dead and Buried until someone on a movie message board recommended it to me. I decided to give it a try and I was not disappointed with this rental at all. This movie kept me interested and not once did I think the acting was bad or that the storyline was getting ridiculous. And not only that, the ending has a great twist to an already suspenseful tale. Quite sad that such an good movie like this is underrated. Add this movie to you're queue and you will not be disappointed.

I wish there were more stars i can give this but i am limited to 5. From Jack Albertsone to Melody Anderson a better cast could not be found.. This is not just another slasher movie. I've seen way to many bad one's latley. Ths is a true horror mystery,,with and ending that is second to none. Do not pass this movie up and after you view it buy it I have 2 copies just in case i wear out the first ... "Bury Me Please " watch the movie you will understand ...

If you like classic/cult type horror movies, you should like this. It's a little hokey due to it's age, but it works for what it is.

Blood: 1/2 Cheese Factor: 5 Acting: 3 Overall: 3 1/2 This movie was not what I was expecting, in a good way though. It had a very different feel than most 80's horror movies, and it also had an eerie overall tone and a twist ending, what more can you ask for? If you like 80's horror this one shouldn't be missed!

I've never heard of this flick until recently, and due to the positive reviews I had to check it out. Pretty good movie, and if you like 80's horror then add this to your list. Has a nice little twist in the end. A twist that towards the end you can see coming, but still very fitting.

I originally saw this movie at the theater "way back" in the early 80s and loved it. I suppose by today's standards it is dated, but I still enjoyed watching it again. More of a story than use of special effects, definitely one of my favorites.

This would have been a good episode of The X Files.Good idea and the acting wasn't bad.It just seemed that there were just too many plot fillers to make the movie longer.I gave it four stars just for the idea of a new twist on a zombie movie with a twilight zone style ending.
