Daughters of Darkness (1971)

Le Rouge aux Levres is a stylish, fascinating, very erotic vampire film based on Sheridan le Fanu's Camilla, the classic tale of a lesbian vampire. A young married couple, Stefan (John Karlen) and Valerie (Daniele Ouimet), honeymoon at a deserted oceanside resort where they meet Countess Elisabeth Bathory (Delphine Seyrig) and her companion Ilona (Andrea Rau). Valerie has discovered that Stefan is a brutal sexual sadist and is drawn to the Countess because of her warmth and sensuality. Ilona attempts to seduce Stefan but is accidentally killed, and the Countess takes her revenge on his wife. Director Harry Kumel directs with stunning visual style and maintains the erotic intensity and tension between the characters with skill, getting a particularly good performance from the magnificent Delphine Seyrig, who resembles in both mood and looks the young Marlene Dietrich. Erotic, unusual and extremely violent, Le Rouge aux Levres, also released as Daughters of Darkness is one of the finest vampire films ever produced, making up with style and class what it might have lacked in budget. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

It wasnt a bad movie, but if you're expecting the full version, you're not going to get it. Blockbuster cuts out all the good sex scenes. This is the directors cut.

Cheesy, hammy and predictable! What else do you want out of a 70's horror flick? Sure, it doesn't have blood. But if you want to see naked ladies screaming and the insinuation of danger...funny movie to watch with friends and mock.

This film might reach two stars. But don't count on script or acting to get it there.

Well written, well cast; an odd mixture of the uncanny and an ice-cold sensuality. If you expect every horror movie to drop the camera into a bucket blood, look elsewhere. If you like atmospheric supernatural stories, like "Don't Look Now," or "Eyes Without a Face," give this one a look.

The Blur-ay Version looked fantastic. This film is a hidden gem from the 70s especially for those that like B-movie grind house and Horror film buffs. The film is about a Love quad-angle between a 2 female vampire couple and a pair of newly weds. Delphine is both charismatic and sexy in the lead role and the film offers a surprisingly respectable feminist undertone for such a sleaze fest. An underrated classic.

I always find the "foreign" films, especially the French, German, etc, a little over my head! Ok a newlywed couple have to change their plans and end up in a hotel that is deserted due to the off season. What was up with "mother"? Was "mother" and the groom lovers? The comment "what will we ever do with her?" threw me off course. Then he gets off by looking at dead bodies and ends up beating his new wife? This is not your average vampire story. It was interesting to listen to the commentaries from the two leading ladies. Ok film to watch once and never again! ~ Susan L.

The acting was terrible. The story was badly written and boring. In my opinion, it wasn't even close to falling under the category of "horror". The particular introduction of "mother" needed more explanation and none ever came. I would not recommend it to anyone.

We finally get to see Willie Loomis (John Karlen) go all out and get crazy. Only liked the countess. The storyline could have been much better explored, especially with Stefan's bizarre mother/father, or whatever that was supposed to be. And as any DS fan knows, the end of the movie is not possible...

This movie is classic "Camp". 1971, made in Europe at a time when Hwood had little nudity in films, the titilation in this film made it popular. This is a vampire movie without any fangs and little blood. Overacted. The interviews with the female stars are interesting but seeing how Daniele aged took away the allure of her role, as the young, oversexed bride. If you are looking for more "True Blood" you won't find it here. 4/12
