Darling (1965)

Julie Christie won an Oscar for her portrayal of a bored, amoral fashion model in this cynical melodrama from director John Schlesinger. Following the break-up of a teenage marriage, Diana Scott (Christie) drifts into the world of modeling and acting, where she meets a television news reporter, Robert Gold (Dirk Bogarde), who leaves his family for her and introduces her to a more powerful and wealthy set. Soon Diana meets somebody more attractive: public relations mogul Miles Brand (Laurence Harvey). After briefly leaving and then drifting back into Robert's life, experiencing an orgy and even getting an abortion, Diana eventually leaves the swinging London scene behind and settles down to an unfulfilling if comfortable life as the wife of millionaire Italian widower Cesare (Jose-Luis deVillalonga). Shocking in its day, Darling (1965) won Oscars for its costumes and script from Frederic Raphael. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

A dated but still interesting character study of how a woman with everything, structures her life to realize... so little.

If you like Breakfast At Tiffany's, then this movie is for you. It's not as lighthearted or comedic, it's a more dramatic tale of a selfish woman that refuses to be a caged bird and there have been questions about it being based on Grace Kelly. Christie most certainly deserved the Oscar for her performance.

As with all great movies, this movie has a good script. It is intelligent in its development of Darling (Diana). Julie Christie does a superb job. Overall, the acting is good. The plot pieces just the right segments together for us to get an all-too-clear picture of what is going on and the inevitable conclusion. Excellent movie.

"Bored, amoral fashion model" is spot on. And if you think watching a "bored, amoral fashion model" cavort about in a drably filmed B&W movie sounds like a good use of your time, have at it.
