One of special-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen's pre-Seventh Voyage of Sinbad efforts, 20 Million Miles to Earth borrows a few pages from King Kong. An American spaceship crashlands off the coast of Sicily. The rescue party discovers that the astronauts have inadvertently brought back a curious gelatinous mass from the planet Venus. This lump of goo rapidly evolves into be a living reptilian creature, which scientists label an "Ymir". While being subjected to laboratory experimentation, the Ymir begins growing by leaps and bounds, and before long the gigantic monstrosity has escaped and is wreaking havoc in Rome. After battling a zoo elephant and taking a swim in the Tiber, the gargantuan creature holes up in the Colosseum, where the film's pyrotechnic finale occurs. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

One of the many pinnacles that were the benchmark for spectacular Effects, that were solely Harryhausen, and they are SPECTACULAR. Still watchable even by todays pinnacle of CGI, and surround sound, and the story has a message that still holds today.

A great movie for a rainy afternoon! The effects by Ray H are truly great and this movie still packs a punch even with the 50's dialog.

I have always considered Ray Harryhausen to be one of the best at stop motion animation. Watching the movie a second time with commentary by both Harryhausen and others just deepened my appreciation for the artist and his craft. Two thumbs up.

It's a classic just because. For something done in the 1950s I was happy to see they did not make the Italians out to be caricatures. Though there was some weird schizo thing going on with Marisa. At some points she's "almost a doctor" taking care of the wounded and showing lots of moxy. Then at other points she's a love sick schoolgirl going gaga for Calder and totally ignoring the presence of the 800 pound extraterrestrial creature in the room. The monster did a good job too. I was impressed with its ability to show vulnerability and restraint while tearing that elephant apart. Ray Harryhausen is legend!

The colorization really brings this story to another level. The colored Ymir is given even more personality this way. And Harryhausen did an excellent job of giving the creature a real personality that makes you feel for him. The scenes between the Ymir and the humans in the barn were very realistic. All in all one of Harryhausen's best.

Still a great show after all these years. The color upgrade is nice and smooth. Amazing technology. These old eyes love it.

Great Fun SiFi movie. And still great after all the years. They don't make them fun like this any more. A must see, and have.

If you're really into early film special effects, then I suppose this movie is for you. But the grainy film quality and cheesy coloration were even more evident on BluRay than they probably would have been otherwise. For those old enough to remember, this is a Drive-In Movie kind of flick, not something to enjoy in your home theater with 7.1 surround sound!
