A Cry in the Dark (1988)
Member Rating:
A barely recognizable Meryl Streep plays the real-life Lindy Chamberlain, who for a long period in the early '80s was the most hated woman in Australia. While visiting the Ayers rock monument in the Outback with her husband, Michael (Sam Neill), Lindy notices a dingo creeping into the tent where her baby lies sleeping. Seconds later, the horrified woman discovers that her child is gone. Despite Lindy's anguished insistence that the dingo killed her baby, the Australian public is of the opinion that Lindy herself is the murderer. This lynch-mob atmosphere is fueled by the press, which insists upon crucifying the Chamberlains in print on a daily basis. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Speaking as an Australian, Meryl Streep did a flawless job of the Aussie accent and mannerisms. The script was very close to what was going on around Australia during the length of this saga/case, especially all the clips of people speculating and criticizing the Chamberlain's.

This was a very good movie. I have not seen Meryl Streep in anything that was not good though.

An interesting story, but rather long and repititious. Unsympathetic characters. Also, dimly lit nightime scenes made it difficult to see what needed to be seen.

...this one really got to me...I remember the real life story and I believe the pretty much holds true to form...pre-trial narratives kept eating at me..what was the "time" element in which this terrible murder happened?...unless I was asleep, it was never given...the real murderer, I think, was sorta-kinda pointed out towards the end...well worth watching...

Interesting story, but the script left a lot to be desired. Some of the charcters were long winded and I doubt that anyone made the long extemporaneous speeches attributed to them. Despite the praise from others in the reviews, Meryl Streep was mediocre in this poorly crafted movie.

Although I do not remember reading or hearing of this event, the movie has a compelling message thoughout. Most mothers can relate to the situation in which Lindy Chamberlain found herself. Who would have thought that a wild dog would have the opportunity or ability to take a 10 pound baby? Apparently the general public in the area had the same thoughts. It is a shame that the mother, innocent of the charges, was ultimately imprisoned. Not only that, but a few years after it was ruled she was innocent and released, she found herself in the midst of a divorce, possibly because of the pressure the marriage was under after the disappearance of baby Azaria.

This tame film seems written for TV, and, given the actual, tragic events, I expected it be more dramatic. Meryl Streep and Sam Neill portray Michael and Lindy Chamberlain in a very low-key manner, which might be true-to-life but lacks for excitement. Not the best work for these two fine actors.

Not too much happening. We didn't finish watching it.
