The Thin Red Line (1964)
Member Rating:
Set during the Allied invasion of the island of Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater during WWII, this film is based on the novel by James Jones. Keir Dullea is Private Doll, who dreads the invasion and steals a pistol to help him protect himself. Sergeant Welsh (Jack Warden), a caustic, battle-scarred veteran, hates Doll, whom he considers a coward. In battle, Doll kills a Japanese soldier and is filled with remorse, which further angers the sergeant. The next day, an emboldened Doll wipes out an entire enemy machine gun post and begins to feel as sadistic as Welsh. The two must work together to clear away some mines, but as they do, their platoon is surprised by a Japanese raid. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Got the 1998 version instead. Starts off slow and stays that way.

Why are they offering this 1964 version if it isn't even available? disappointed when I got the "new " version even if the CD read 1964 version.

Did not like this movie. The only thing that kept me in my movie seat was waiting to see George Clooney. Guess what? He showed up in the very last scene for about 30 seconds. A waste of money for me.

I doubt that Penn played any part in this 1964 version of "The Thin Red Line"

This was to be Terrence Malick’s final film, and all of Hollywood wanted to be in his last triumph. With literally a who’s who of Hollywood, all that Malick managed to do was look at how soldiers viewed the fear of war. And not very well at that. The results of his efforts...a terrible movie. It seemed as if Malick was no longer up to the task., This film was poorly received by the press and movie fans alike, and justifiably so. The movie misfires like an engine with to low an octane. Not one actor seemed believable, with the exception of Penn who gave the only worthwhile performance. With this cast of character you would have expected so much more. All-in-all, this film is too long, too slow, and too poorly acted to make anyone to take notice
