Half affectionate parody and half enthusiastic tribute to the swashbuckling pirate epics of the 1930's and 40's, The Crimson Pirate stars Burt Lancaster as Captain Vallo, the smiling leader of a pack of unscrupulous pirates. While on the high seas, Vallo and his men spy a well-stocked merchant ship, and waste no time in relieving it of its contents. One of the passengers on the cargo vessel, Baron Gruda (Leslie E. Bradley), informs Vallo that a political revolt is shaking a island nation in the Caribbean to its foundations. The pirates set their course to the island, hoping to sell the arms they've just stolen to rebel leader Sebastian (Frederick Leister), while planning to later double their profit by turning him in to the Government leaders who are offering a reward for his capture. Vallo's plans change when he meets Sebastian's daughter Consuelo (Eva Bartok) and falls in love, while she teaches the pirate the wisdom of her father's philosophies. Vallo and his faithful sidekick Ojo (Nick Cravat) soon join Sebastian's men, and fight with them in a valiant struggle for freedom. Burt Lancaster and Nick Cravat were once partners in their early days as circus acrobats, and they got to put their skills to good use in this picture; keep an eye peeled for an early performance by future horror movie great Christopher Lee. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

...this one is right on, the chases, the endless brawls, the kiss, the silly costumes, the baffoons, the mutiny, the good guys and the bad guys, etc., etc. Don't take it too seriously and just enjoy it.

The Crimson Pirate is a fun, swashbuckling movie. Lancaster is the best pirate that ever buckled a swash--young, athletic, showing off his early experience as an acrobat. And his pirate captain, Vallo, is a guy who tries really hard to be bad, but when the chips are down, just has to settle for being a hero--much to his own constant disappointment. Eva Bartok is the hot Latin beauty who undermines all Vallo's dastardly schemes and seduces him into being her good guy, after all. Great fun, and a healthy dose of comedy to go with the high jinks on the high seas. Look for an impossibly young Christopher Lee as a Spanish diplomatic villain and Nick Cravat, Lancaster's old acrobatic partner as the mute, but clever sidekick to Capt. Vallo. Hailed as one of the best swashbuckling movies of all time. With love under will, Bob, Adastra, The Wizzard of Jacksonville

I loved this movie when I was a little kid. Kids would probably still think it's very funny. It's strange for today's adults, however. It's more or less a parody on the Errol Flynn/Tyrone Power genre of the day. Those who aren't familiar will be very confused.

This movie is about having fun, the kid's loved it. It has innovations that movies still copy from today; walking under water using a capsized rowboat for air, inventing creative weapons to defeat overwhelming odds using materials at hand, acrobatic rope stunts atop the rigging of old sailing ship. THe kids laughed at the chase scenes, they loved the energy Burt Lancaster brings - and so do I. Its a great movie, a true classic the whole family can enjoy.

One of the funniest, fastest and most colorful action movies around. Also it's pirate themed so this classic should have been re-released as pirates seem to be so popular again. The scenery is seaworthy and magnificent. Burt and Nick are very athletic in multiple categories so the adventure is constant. This film should be made available to all again.

I had watched it as a child and enjoyed it tremendously. Watching it now brings back memories. Watching Lancaster and Cravat do their own stunts is amazing compared with todays stand-ins and CGI characters. They don't make them like they used to.

A classic...lots of silly running around great for kids, plus very athletic acrobatics. Fun for the whole family.

One of my favorite Burt Lancaster movies. My grown son watched it for the first time and laughed out loud, thoroughly enjoying it! Flame and the Arrow is on it's way.
