One of the most influential examples of anime, Akira is based on the manga (comic book) by Katsuhiro Otomo. The story is set in the post-apocalyptic community of Neo-Tokyo. Tetsuo is a fiercely individualistic member of a scroungy motorcycle gang. The despotic authorities, the robot-like police, and even the cycle gang pursue Tetsuo when he's bombarded with a new, insidious energy source that has rendered him telekinetic. Budgeted at eight million dollars, Akira has become a cult favorite in the States thanks to generous midnight-movie exposure and its availibilty on video and cable TV. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

artwork for this movie was excellent but trying to cram about 13 graphic novels into a movie was not a good idea. it would have been better a series out of it which they could build the character and explain more what Akira was

This is one of the earlier Japanamations to make the American market. It can be a bit hard to follow the first time through but it's worth it. This film has a more serious tone for an animation. Keep in mind this movie was released 20 years ago when Japanamation wasn't seen in the us.

The story of this movie is really weird, but I guess that's what I should come to expect from anime. It was a good story, though, although the movie itself felt a little too long. I enjoyed the violence.

This is the greatest animated movie of all time. The plot is thinks and twisting. The only downfall is one that I find with many Asian films, the characters are a little underdeveloped. After I finished watching this movie, I had to watch it again. Great movie.

If only more Anime movies even attempted the scope of this. From the motorcycles to the music, i cant get enough. True Cyberpunk. Thank you, Otomo-san and the hundreds of talented artists.

Terrible movie. The plot was a pile of strewn together pieces. Obviously there was a lot missing. Nothing was explained, and what was explained was typical philosophical anime bologna. The characters were just fitted to be with whatever the plot needed them to be. They were just tools and didn't serve any purpose besides to continue the B.S. "story". They go from homicidal, to sad, to scared, to at peace and all faster than I can microwave a burrito. That is not good story telling. My biggest problem with the movie is how it is considered post-apocalyptic? Everything was built up with a massive amount of people in the city. There was much more technology than today. How is that considered post apocalyptic?! Reviewers need to actually watch movies before repeating what everyone else says. The animation was creepy, disgusting and way over the top a lot of the time. And yes it is passable animation but that does not excuse the rest of this overrated "classic".
