Four years after Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Ralph Bakshi tapped into the live action mixed with cell animated world in this adult-themed production telling the story of an edgy comic book artist who crosses the line into his own cartoon universe. The story begins with a prologue in postwar Las Vegas, where Vegas cop Frank Harris (Brad Pitt) is catapulted into the cartoon Cool World after crashing his motorcycle. The Cool World is a jive-animated parallel dimension created by animator Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne). Among Jack's many creations is the knock-out broad Holli Would (Kim Basinger). Holli wants to become human -- or a "noid" in Cool World parlance. This is no 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'. For the most part, the animation seems lazy and rushed, as if they couldn't wait to get the movie out. It focuses more on being vulgar and shocking for the sake of it. The dialogue seems poorly written, and the plot nonsensical. Basically, it acts as a cartoon fetishist's wet dream, coming together in a rushed ending that doesn't make much sense at all. The only real reason to watch this is if you're a fan of Brad Pitt, or just want to see it for the sake of having seen it. Otherwise, don't bother.

This movie starts strong and edgy but looses it near the end. There are some creative ideas going on, but the early edginess and creativity only makes the forced happy ending feel even more cliched. Mostly a decent movie, even if the ending kills it.

This, and arguably most of Bakshi's films were not intended for a 'kid' audience. Don't give this partly animated film a bad review simply because it's not 'for kids'. While more mainstream than some of Bakshi's other work (such as Wizards), I wasn't disappointed. He certainly has a directing style which is uniquely his own, and is evident in each film he made.

We have here the zany, Fleischer-esque world of Ralph Bakshi. That's a nice place to be. And do his "animated tootsies" have sex appeal? You bet! So everything's going along well until Holly Wood (credited as "Holly Would," but forget that bad joke) turns into Kim Basinger. Basinger has none of the animated Holly's charisma or sex appeal (or intelligence, apparently.) She flops like a fish out of water and is horrible in this film. The film would have been much stronger if the live-action Basinger got fewer scenes. However, the cartoons keep the movie from being a waste. It's no Roger Rabbit in the end, but it's fun.

I was just looking at Pete's Dragon and this smutty movie was listed as recommended! Even as an adult this movie is kinda stupid but I wouldn't recommend this movie for kids under 15 or 16 depending on the child's maturity level.

I remember watching this when it first came out and thought then that it was really weird. Watching it again didn't make it any better. Can't believe I decided to watch it again. Definitely not a movie for kids!!
