Contempt is the story of the end of a marriage. Camille (Brigitte Bardot) falls out of love with her husband Paul (Michel Piccoli) while he is rewriting the screenplay Odyssey by American producer Jeremiah Prokosch (Jack Palance). Just as the director of Prokosch's film, Fritz Lang, says that The Odyssey is the story of individuals confronting their situations in a real world, Le Mépris itself is an examination of the position of the filmmaker in the commercial cinema. Godard himself was facing this situation in the production of Le Mépris. Italian producer Carlo Ponti had given him the biggest budget of his career, and he found himself working with a star of Bardot's magnitude for the first time. ~ Louis Schwartz, Rovi

Not that impressed with this movie. Everyone was just a little too "full of themselves" for my liking! I had always thought of Brigitte Bardot as one of the worlds' most beautiful women-she has nothing on Sophia Loren!

I consider myself educated in the art of film. I am familiar with camera angle selection, lighting, dialogue, writing, blocking, etc, etc, etc. I could go on and on. I am very familiar with the likes of Bergman, Fellini and Bertolucci. HOWEVER, this film (and I use the term in jest) was NO film. This is (was) a joke. The humor is so dated you can't even pretend to understand it. Absolutely pathetic. Save your time. Don't try to figure this one out. It is someone's idea of a joke-- that is on the viewer. REALLY BAD!

I rented this movie as I wanted to see a movie with Brigitte Bardot. I really did not like it. The whole movie seemed artificial. And based on this movie, I fail to understand the appeal of Brigitte Bardot.

Too slow and predictable. The only redeeming aspect is the cast - Bridget Bardot, jack palance and Picolli

Most of the film was either Brigit's derriere or her pouting face. Didn't see her talent in this film

This film is very interesting in many ways. Best with the commentary if you are not familiar with the work of Godard, but you don't have to be a film student to enjoy. The slow disintegration of the relationship by continual petty sniping rather than one big explosion. Point and counterpoint throughout, beautiful locations, (including a bare BB derriere) vs. banal activity. Bardot as an actress, not a sx kitten. FRITZ LANG plays a large and significant role, great to see this famous man in action. Long takes, 30 for the entire movie. This is a film, on its face, about making a film- the Oddessy- but not about filming. At the same time the film is also all about the technique of filmmaking, by the way it is filmed. Working with his largest budget, Godard ended up with only $200k for production after paying the star salaries. Recommend- Breathless, Une Femme Est une Femme, Diabolique, films of Jean Renoir. Enjoy learning about filmmaking.

I had forgotten that "art films" of that time period are to be avoided. This movie was slower than watching paint dry. Plusses: Jack Palance was better than expected in a very different role. And the scenery around Capri was spectacular.
