Command Decision (1948)
Member Rating:
Command Decision is a stagebound but consummately acted adaptation of William Wister Haines' Broadway play. Clark Gable, starring in the role essayed on Broadway by Paul Kelly, plays Air Force Brigadier General "Casey" Dennis. With time at a premium, Dennis sends waves of bomber squadrons into Germany to knock out the enemy's jet plane factories. Though Dennis seems utterly unconcerned about the fate of his pilots (even his superior officer Walter Pidgeon is appalled by the heavy losses), the audience knows that his duty is exacting a severe emotional toll on him. Thanks to pressure from a misguided US senator, "butcher" Dennis is replaced by the supposedly more humane Brian Donlevy. But Donlevy realizes that Gable's decisions were the correct ones, and he vows to continue his predecessor's "suicide missions". ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Excellent movie. Lot's of real war time footage. Well constructed plot and good acting by all cast members. Well worth a watch. In fact, treat yourself to a great Sunday afternoon and watch this movie and 12 O'Clock High.

I loved this movie's ability to rip-off the veil between the public's perception of WWII and the men actually privy to the behind-the-scenes movements. The men trying to balance Washington and politics and the merit of winning the war vs. the men just trying to win the war. It's very interesting and for war or WWII buffs, this movie is a must-see. Definitely worth watching!

I can sympatize with the general about sendiing the men on strategic flights. The ending was kind of corney, bbut we can't get rid of Gable, can we?

While many of the scenes are in offices and other closed locations, the filming included enough air shots that it didn't give all that much impression of being stage bound. The descriptions of the essential problem were highly engaging, and the explanations of the very difficult choices were well scripted. For anyone interested in WWII history, this is a really interesting movie.
