I absolutely love this film. It is powerfully moving, and Jane Fonda and Jon Voight give the performances of their lives. Their characters' tender, passionate love is so vivid and believable, and the difficulties faced by the young hospitalized veterans, as well as by Bruce Dern's character, are so fiercely affecting. This film rings of truth and juxtaposes love against war, life against death and hope against despair. The 60's soundtrack of melancholy protest and other songs presents an eloquent background to the drama. "Coming Home" reminds me of the title of Thomas Wolfe's novel, "You Can't Go Home Again". Sadly, America fought an unjust war in Vietnam, only to turn its back on its returning veterans. Was this review helpful? Yes

One of the best films ever made on the effects the Vietnam war had on returning soldiers and the wives who were left to cope when their husbands were sent to fight. We are shown Jane Fonda, who portrayed a soldiers wife, transform into understanding the horrible effects that useless war had on the crippled men-both physically and psychologically as she volunteers at the VA Hospital. It was thought provoking and dealt with the reality of Post Tramatic Stress Disorder, physical handicaps, etc. Jon Voight was sensitive, real and made such a touching speech to H.S. kids that it will stay with you for a long time. The love scene between Jane Fonda and Jon Voight as a crippled man was done in a meaningful.sensitive manner. This film is reality-based and should be seen by anyone interested in understanding the horrific effects of war. Was this review helpful? Yes

Somehow I missed this title from years back and I am extremely pleased that I rented this title since I love war movies. Although, there are no war scenes of Vietnam, I came to accept and beleive the performances of this human drama where Jane falls for a Vietnam Vet while husband is away fighting the war. The ending is shocking in the sense that not all questions are answered. I guess we have to use our imagination to determine the outcome. That aside, I found the storyline and fine performances were first rate. Was this review helpful? Yes

It's Jane Fonda for crying out loud! Anything she is in is great! And of course, Jon Voight is an amazing actor, of course! It is a good story and a well-acted movie. Was this review helpful? Yes

A flawed film. But also a film of tremendous grace, power, and originality. The Bruce Dern character is criminally underdeveloped which damages the power of the climax. For the film to fully work, we have to believe that Fonda would consider staying with this man, who starts as a martinet, and ends up as frightening unbalanced, and dangerous, while Jon Voight seems a near saint. The Fonda character also starts off as a cliche but deepens quickly. Some of the 60s rock songs are bit too on the nose. Yet all that said, there is magic here. In the magnificent performance by Voight, arguably his best, in the fine work by Jane Fonda. In the feeling of almost documentary realism in moments of their relationship, in the radically honest dealing with paraplegic sexuality, and the scars of Viet Nam of individuals and a nation. This is a film with special moments that so stick with me (e.g. Voight speaking to a bunch of high school kids) that I can look past the flies in the ointment. Was this review helpful? Yes

Jane Fonda always has a political undertone to her - and this movie is no exception. Voight does a nice job as a returnee Vietnam vet. It's still hard for me to watch Jane Fonda in any movie, frankly - after the incident she pulled in North Vietnam with our enemies, as our boys were being killed in South Vietnam. Not a bad film. The ending was effective, but the use of music was awful. Needing to incorporate "Late-60's Music 101" but not wanting to include the edits necessary for songs in films, instead entire songs are played during the film. In order not to interrupt the narrative, the songs are played at a low level so the dialogue can continue. It's like watching a film while somebody's playing a Classic Rock station in the next room. And beautiful, dramatic songs such as The Beatles' "Hey Jude" are rendered impotent by being played quietly behind scenes that are mundane and completely out of sync with the song. And this happens throughout the film. Was this review helpful? Yes
