The Comfort of Strangers (1991)
Member Rating:
In this erotic thriller, a young English couple on vacation in Venice find themselves seduced by a mysterious older couple. Mary (Natasha Richardson) and Colin (Rupert Everett) have come to Italy to chart the future of their troubled relationship. They soon meet Robert (Christopher Walken), the enigmatic owner of a picturesque watering hole. He entertains them with copious vino and colorful stories of a childhood spent with a brutal, domineering father. Later, drunk and lost in the maze-like city, the couple once again encounter Robert, who puts them up at his gorgeous villa. They also meet his wife, Caroline (Helen Mirren), who suffers from crippling back pain and obvious emotional instability. Fascinated by the glamorous older couple but disturbed by their dysfunctions, Colin and Mary find themselves slowly drawn into sexual and emotional games that culminate in sudden violence. Directed by Paul Schrader, The Comfort of Strangers was adapted by playwright Harold Pinter from the novel by Ian McEwan. Richardson previously starred in Patty Hearst, Schrader's portrait of the newspaper heiress-turned-terrorist. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi

This was a pointless, boring movie. Do not rent or buy this;so called 'erotic thriller'(my eye!). The only good part of this film; was the 'pure' beauty of the late Natasha Richardson.

Very weird, a true Christopher Walken movie, as he is always in strange parts. I also thought with a great cast it would be so much more. Very disappointing for sure.

Very disappointing, given the great cast, I expected alot more than lukewarm acting, a wierd storyline and an ending that I felt was an insult to the viewer's intelligence.

Not a very good movie. It hardly focuses on the more interesting couple of the two, the one played by Helen Mirren and Chrstopher Walken. The outcome makes no sense simply because we never got a chance to get to know this couple; we don't know what makes them tick, even though we know they're weird. But then they are all weird in this movie.

Poor directing, too long, sound track for a movie in Turkey, not Italy.

we were haunted by this movie after it was over. We talked about it for two days, discussing what the heck happend in the end. It was a little slow in the beginning, but you knew something bad was going to happen. I really really liked it. Give it a try, and don't believe what Rebecca L said about it, its a damn good movie.

Creepy movie. Very unsatisfying ending, but I will say, thought-provoking. In truth, sorry I watched it.

This story is very unusual and altho I liked it it really kept me confused and I had to go online and Google it when I finished to have it explained to me

Try as he may, Rupert is super gay, so it was difficult to see these two people as a couple. The complexity of Pinter is better left for the stage than the screen, After watching this film, the notion of spending time with strangers than the one who recommended this film, became more appealing with each frame. Wife: Thanks Brad - you are a loser, and the film was better than spending time with you!

One of the worst movies I've seen.
