Come and Get It (1936)
Member Rating:
Set in the woodlands of Wisconsin, Come and Get It stars Edward Arnold as a logger-turned-lumber tycoon. In his rise to the top, Arnold loses out on a chance for lasting happiness by spurning earthy dance hall girl (Frances Farmer), who marries his best pal (Walter Brennan) on the rebound. Marrying for position rather than love, Arnold becomes a society leader in Milwaukee. His son (Joel McCrea) falls in love with the daughter of Arnold's first love (Frances Farmer plays both mother and daughter). Himself smitten by the daughter, Arnold battles with his son over the girl's affection, only to be shocked back into his senses when the girl reprimands his son, "Don't hit him! He's an old man!" Based on a novel by Edna Ferber, Come & Get It carries two directorial credits: William Wyler was dismissed early on by producer Sam Goldwyn, and when Howard Hawks took over, it was on the proviso that Wyler be given co-directing billing. For his performance as Edward Arnold's Scandinavian cohort, Walter Brennan won the first-ever "best supporting actor" Oscar. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The lumber industry narrative to start the movie was very informative and interesting. I was impressed by Frances Farmer's performance. I had never seen her on screen before. My wife and I give it 2 thumbs up.

Exellent old movie. My Grandaddy was a logger in that era in the NW. I don't know where they came up with the logging footage but it was great. Joel McCrea didn't have much of a chance to show his stuff, but he was young then. Edward Arnold was at his best. Walter Brennan a little hokey but still good, and Francis Farmer did an excellent job in her duel role. My wife and I give it 4 stars.

...pretty predictable ending, but overall still an enjoyable watch on a rainy day.

Formulaic plot, and obnoxious "Swedish lumberjack" character (Yumpin' Yiminee!) make this movie close to unwatchable, but there was an extended sequence showing how they used to send the logs from the lumber camp downstream to the sawmill that I found fascinating. Chutes and flumes and setting off explosions under piles of logs to get them to roll down hill and into the river, etc.

I was so surprised to find this movie here on Blockbuster. I saw it on cable just by chance one day. Couldn't turn it off, it is such a compelling story line and great acting. Rented it here on blockbuster and showed it to my husband and he loved it also. This is an example of what movies used to be like, just a great story that takes time to develop the characters and not so formulaic. This movie has a brilliant ending that is so very poignant. It's a wonderful movie for anyone to see. Now one of my favorites.

Edna Ferber's 1935 novel of the same name can easily be obtained: don't know if it's still in print, but it has been recently. This movie reduces an epic novel with intense social overtones to an absurd melodrama, and cuts out half the plot. The movie tampers so heavily with the book that one finds it hard to believe that it came out the year after Ferber's bestseller was published. Of course, most people will want to watch this to see the amazing Frances Farmer. With all do respect, she wasn't that great, and her psychological problems weren't quite as colorful as the Jessica Lange movie.Edward Arnold was a distinguished performer, so rent "You Can't Take It With You" instead if you want to see him in a really great film.
