Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)
Member Rating:
The granddaddy of all "computer run amok" films, Colossus: The Forbin Project concerns a huge electronic brain designed to control the American missile defense system. Colossus' technicians do not count on the computer developing an intelligence of its own. Communicating with its Russian counterpart, Colossus decides to take over the earth, threatening global destruction should anyone try to pull its plug. The film's climax is unsettling, but no more so than the actual state of world affairs in 1970. Colossus: The Forbin Project was filmed in Canada. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I saw this move in it's infancy, I was 17 years old in 1970, as I watched Colossus: The Forbin Project again at 53 y.o., I was enthralled again, the movie is fast paced and unpretentious. Eric Braeden, of "Young and the Restless" fame, was perfect and better looking. Even in the day of our zip drives and Bush, Iraq, all that has gone on in the name of "Security", why hasn't anyone updated, reissued or emphasized the now oracle-like entertaining suppositions that Colossus truly scared us with in 1970? Fabulous, you will never view your Dell, or anything technological the same. H.A.L. "Ha!", check out Colossus and then sit, stew and wait...or RUN...Oh, I forgot...WHERE?

Imagine a computer so smart as to be able to take over the world. Colossus does, and the results are frightening! The whole time I watched this movie I kept thinking of the pervasisve use of I-phones, I-pods, the Internet, etc. This flick is ripe for a modern-day re-make! One of the most chilling sounds ever - a flat, emotionless, metallic voice announcing: "This is the voice of Colossus."

Absolutely worth seeing for sci-fi buffs. This is the original "creation of Skynet" for Term fans. OK, now it seems dated and cheesy i.e. original Star Trek, but the ideas are the foundations for many more current, sfx-loaded films. Didn't like the abrupt end.

While the story line still bodes ominously for those who think computers will someday be given the opportunity to take over the world, I don't think this film translated well from 1970 to 2007. It was quite hokey, the script was horrible, and the ending, well...it was stupid.

This movie was made before 2001: A Space Oddyssey, and is a very good computer movie. While it is the standard "Computer goes amok" type, it is notable because it is one of if not the first and doesn't make wildly inaccurate statements or overly fake. The real problem is the DVD itself. The movie looks and sounds ok, but it is in cropped Pan and Scan format, not in the original widescreen. Also there are no features. There is no menu, no scene selection, nothing. It's hard to be critical with a rental, but it's surprising they made this DVD work like a VHS tape. Still, this is the only way many can see this movie if you don't have a Laserdisc player or VHS tape player anymore.

I'll let some of the other "Member Reviews" mostly speak for me. I didn't find a lot of personal satisfaction with the movie, but I think the concept was good and there should be a modern remake with the right script and everything else.

This is truely one of the best movies ever made. Great actors! Will hopefully add to my movie collection ASAP. I watched this movie when I was a kid and today at 55 years old, I still think it's one of the best movies ever made.

A great old movie that I hadn't seen in years. Yes, it look dated now but the message is still a powerful as it was when the movie was produced.

in 1970, interesting although 2001: A Space Oddessy did in better. in 2010, this is vapid.
