Man in the Middle (1964)
Member Rating:
Based on Howard Fast's novel The Winston Affair, this WW II-era crime drama is set in India and chronicles the attempts of an American military attorney to defend a lieutenant who shot a British officer in cold blood. Many witnesses were present and the question the lawyer must answer is whether the defendant is sane enough to stand trial. His investigation leads him to believe that his client is not. Unfortunately, his general is anxious to resolve the case to quell mounting tensions between British and American troops. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

A first rate cast makes this film worth viewing..the story line is providing a rational for murder in a military barrack in India during WW2..especially when the odds are stacked against you..thus enters Bob Mitchum as counsel for the defense..and what is at stake? trying to maintain the civility between the British and American forces since it was an american officer that murders a brit non-com. 31/2 stars.

This is a black and White movie with a good story, but the acting is terrible. But then, Robert Mitchum has never impressed me as an actor.

The Man In The Middle can best be described as a military courtroom drama instead of a WWII film. It is based on a novel by Howard Fast called The Winston Affair. This black and white film was made just a few years after The Town Without Pity and is similar in style. Set in 1945 India Robert Mitchum has the easy assignment of being a token defense lawyer for a confessed murdered. Both the British and American forces want the trial over quickly and without fuss. Instead Mitchum takes on the political and military establishment and puts his career on the line to save his client's life. This was a very good movie with a great cast
