Luchino Visconti (Count don Luchino Visconti di Modrone) was a film director, true, but he was also a nobleman and a grand patron of traditional European culture: opera, art, music, crafts and literature. These interests enliven many of his films, but few have been so inspired as the four-hour epic, Ludwig, about the castle-building "mad king" of Bavaria. This long film, made very near the end of Visconti's life, suffers greatly when shortened, as every moment is essential to the story. There are at least four different versions of the film (from just under three hours to over four hours in length); the uncut four-hour version is the most coherent, even though many might find it rather long. The disintegration of aristocratic individuals is a continuing theme of Visconti's, though Ludwig's is the most thorough decay he filmed. The last ruling king of Bavaria (1845-1886) is noted for many things besides his eccentricities: he sold Bavaria to Germany, ending the rule of the Bavarian monarchy; he built amazing castles all over his country (with the proceeds from the sale); and he was Richard Wagner's main sponsor. He was also a notorious recluse, conducting a lifelong platonic love affair with Empress Elizabeth of Austria, and finally succumbing to his adoration of handsome men in a series of outrageous affairs and orgies. His excesses eventually led to his being declared mentally incompetent and being held prisoner in his own castle. The film depicts this incredible life from his coronation at age 19 to his (unproved) assassination well over 20 years later. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Must see, history in action. Lovely to see Romy Schneider, one of my all-time favorite actresses. Also Silvana Mangana in a supporting role as Wagner's lover -- exceptional.

This was one of the worst made movies I have ever watched. I only watched because I went to the castle on the cover AND I found no other movies on Ludwig. It is really hard to watch a movie and read the subtitles.

Not the best Visconti but there are still some beautiful scenes and music. For those who want to see the complete Visconti films.

This is a film about the German kingdom of Bavaria. But instead of speaking German, the film is in the Italian language, which is highly inappropriate and disrespectful of German culture. Many details are just wrong, a blundering example of poor production. But the scenery and costuming is beautiful, but so what? In short, very disappointing.

Ludwig's story is a real tragedy. By modern standards, he was dreamer, and not really up to the task of king or emperor. Central to this story is his fascination with the worlds created by Wagner in his operas, which became the inspiration for the great Neueschwannstein castle in Germany, (which was the inspiration for the Disney castle, which really doesn't compare). Yes, it's a little strange seeing this German tale in Italian with English substitles, but it's worth it. It's a fascinating story and the cinematography is stunning. A little understanding of Romantic sensibilities helps to truly grasp this wonderful film. Visconti shot the film on location, so it also serves as a tour of the most opulent castles of Germany.

First off if you watch for the costumes and scenery then it is a treat of how they must have lived in 1850-1870. This German movie dubbed in Italian with English sub-titles -- yes not joking about that, if interesting to watch -- a bit too dramatic for my tastes. I fast forward through most of it. But the costumes and scenes are worth it if you are interested in that. The acting is almost painful at times. The plot, if there was one, seems a bit forced.

Scenery was beautiful, but too slow and halting. The Italian language instead of German was distracting and took away from the overall feeling of the story. I returned it after only watching about a half hour...just couldn't make it any longer...And I love the history behind this..too bad. I was disappointed.

Hated both Ludwig movies. They were absolutely terrible. No idea why it was in Italian since they have nothing to do with Ludwig's life. He was a German king (Bavaria).
