The Long Ships (1963) Reviews

The Long Ships (1963)
Member Rating:
In this elaborately mounted seafaring adventure, Rolfe (Richard Widmark) is a Viking leader with the cunning and devious mind of a pirate. Rolfe tells others sailors of "The Mother of Voices," a mammoth bell made of gold and as tall as three men, but he adds enough incorrect details to throw them off the proper trail. However, Aly Mansuh (Sidney Poitier), the leader of a group of ambitious Moors, sees through Rolfe's story, and soon the two are in a breakneck race to be the first to capture the precious bell. The Long Ships also features Russ Tamblyn and Oscar Homolka. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Gee, what a great movie! An action/adventure must-see from the 1960's.

Vintage action flick. The acting was pretty lame in spots,as were the accents. But if you just sit back and pretend you're a kid at an old Saturday afternoon matinee, it's fun to watch

The story line was good, the continuity not so much. The acting was wooden. My husband watched it in it's entirety, while I dozed.

This is one to skip. I thought it would be a good action flick. Instead I spent the petter part of the movie trying to figure out what was going on. I think there were flash backs in the movie, but the fact that I am not sure shows how lost I was. The special effects were really bad - about equal to 1930s Flash Gordon series. If you can watch this one without using the fast forward button, you are more tolerant than I am.

A combination of a silly screenplay, dull directing, and atrocious acting by Richard Widmark results in an excruciating movie experience that only a Viking-crazed kid could enjoy. Rampant sexism and an undertow of racism don't help either. The only watchable scenes are of a very young Sidney Poitier portraying a Moorish ruler with quiet intensity.

This was a movie I saw over 40 years ago in the theatre and had fond memories. Sadly, this is not a good movie. I would mainly recommend it to gay movie goers as it is homoerotic. Sidney Poitier with a little richard pompadour is too much.

This was a very cheesy movie staring a 60 year old Richard Widmark as the son of a Viking shipbuilder. Unfortunately he looked 60 years old. Sidney Poitier as the Moorish leader also looked out of place. Pick up a copy of the Bedford Incident if you want to see these two great actors in a great movie or watch The Viking with Kurt Douglas which was made with a much bigger budget if you want to see a movie about Norsemen. Could a Viking ship travel all the way from Denmark through the maelstrom to The Pillars Of Hercules in North Africa to find the golden bell? This film has a little of everything including the drunken Viking orgy, the beautiful King's daughter, the beautiful Moorish leaders wife, and a harem of beautiful women. All of that plus the Mare of Steel and a great death scene at the end. No special features on the DVD except for previews of a couple of even worse Sinbad movies. Skip this one.
