While Raquel Welch was a household name and an international sex symbol through much of the 1960s'and 1970s, Hollywood didn't seem sure about what to do with her; this was one of her more unusual vehicles from this period, in which Welch plays K.C. Carr, a divorcee with two children who becomes romantically involved with Burt Henry (Kevin McCarthy). Burt is the owner of a roller derby team, the Kansas City Bombers, and convinces K.C. that a career on the rink might be just the thing for her. K.C. soon discovers that the sport is rougher than she imagined, and her teammate Jackie (Helena Kallianiotes) is convinced that K.C. is out to replace her as the Bombers' star attraction. But another member of the team, Horrible Hank Hopkins (Norman Alden), shows K.C. the ropes and stands up for her. When Hank gets traded to another team, K.C. has to learn to fend for herself against Jackie as well as Burt. Raquel Welch did all her own skating for this film; an accident while filming one of the derby sequences left her with a broken wrist that shut down production for six weeks. Legendary singer and songwriter Phil Ochs was tapped by the producers of Kansas City Bomber to write a theme song for the film; it wasn't used, though it was released as a single and appeared on the compilation CD The War is Over: The Best of Phil Ochs. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The decline of Roller Derby parallels the decline in popularity of roller skating. You don't see any new roller skating rinks being constructed, do you? And just about all of the Roller Derby leagues have folded. But, for those of us old enough to remember watching Roller Derby LIVE this flick is enormous fun.

It's like Porn w/o sex. Meaning the dialog is simple .....real simple ,but if you ever enjoyed Roller Derbys' in the 70's you will like this. The derby looks authentic. My husband said "next time a movie made after '88" I guess he didn't like the "Cinemaphotography" LOL!

Dated and fairly predictable, but of interest if you like roller games, outdone by Whip It, but still worth a look. This is probably one of Welsh's best dramatic roles until she discovered her comedic flair in The Three Musketeers and the Four Musketeers. She carries her roles fairly well, but I think she is limited by a weak script. It makes you wonder what she could have done if she had been able to move beyond just a pretty face and body and into some really good and challenging roles.

Movie seems to do a good job of portraying roller derby of that era. It shows the drama and behind the scenes scheming that went on. Unfortunately, the plot is meandering and fails to grip the viewer. The film's climax is disappointingly weak, and I wasn't happy with how some of the films conflicts were left unresolved. The dialogue is often quite lame. Maybe that was even intentional to a point, since most of the silliest things said come from one particular character. Even if that is the case, I think they went too far. It detracted from the film. Raquel Welch is good in the movie. She sells her character very well. The movie gets a full third star just for her performance. If you're a fan of roller derby and want a movie that doesn't require much deep thinking, it's probably worth a watch. Otherwise, it's skippable.

If you like crowd shots of old, ugly, and I mean ugly fans, this is the film for you. The acting rivals that of Highlander II, the action is sub par to that of GLOW wrestling from the 80s. I haven't seen character development like this since Phantom Menace.
