Christmas in Connecticut (1945) Reviews

Christmas in Connecticut (1945)
Member Rating:
War hero Dennis Morgan becomes the object of a publicity stunt staged by magazine publisher Sidney Greenstreet. The corpulent print mogul announces that Morgan has won a Christmas dinner, to be prepared by the magazine's housekeeping expert Barbara Stanwyck in her own Connecticut home. The catch: Not only does Stanwyck not have a home in Connecticut, but she's never been in a kitchen in her life! She also doesn't have a husband (as her articles claim), so Stanwyck's erstwhile beau Reginald Gardiner is pressed into service as the hubby. As for the cooking, that will be handled by master chef S. Z. "Cuddles" Sakall. This solves everything, right? No way, Jose. Long dismissed as a lesser film farce, Christmas in Connecticut has its own irresistible charm, and has in recent years become a perennial Christmas TV attraction. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I loved this movie. Have watched it over and over again. It's a bit simple and silly in humor, but that's one of it's draws. Wasn't what I would call the traditional Holiday movie, but definitely pleasing. It's a movie of it's times, so if you are looking for hardcore sexual humor you won't find it here, however, you will find sexual tension of sorts between the main characters written in a way that movies of the time did, left some to your imagination and making you want more. This movie did grasp me, I found myself wanting to know how it turned out, but already knowing she'll get her man in the end, that's fairly obvious. The route in between was dleightfully silly.

I really enjoyed this movie. It is a little wacky at times, but the premise is clever. A lesser known classic film for Christmas, but it really shouldn't be. A must see!

Few movies ever made can be watched a second time (some are hard to watch even once). Fewer still can stand up to repeated viewings: This is one of the rarest of exceptions--To this day I'm not altogether definite why this is, but, I've never tired of watching this movie, as many times as I've watched it AND am going to watch it again and again (I own a colorized copy which YOU are probably never going to see because of a truly bizarre campaign by self-appointed film "taste dictators" for whom it is not enough that they not watch colorized films but who also demand that YOU too should be forbidden from enjoying them... except for Shirley Temple movies for some peculiar reason). This movie is almost the perfect Hollywood film: tastefully directed, flawlessly cast and acted... a masterpiece marriage of script, cinematography, editing, casting, directing, you name it. Why this film is not considered one of the ten best comedies ever is a mystery.

I wondered why this gem of a film, which is rated with 4 and 5 stars by most reviewers, would end up categorized as a 3.5 star movie: because two people gave it a 1/2 star and 3 stars because they received a broken DVD and could not see it (how can you rate a movie you have not seen?!). Those are not ratings, they are complaints irrelevant to the quality of the movie! They should be removed!

This is a great movie. Humerous & a love story. Since it was made in 1945 you need not worry about having to wade through a lot of garbage to enjoy the movie.

I loved this movie as a kid and still love it today. It's a fun, old fashioned Christmas story.

This is not really a Christmas movie. You might see a decorated tree in a few scenes. There is not even any Christmas music. The story is a bit silly and don't expect it to make much sense. I didn't like the implied adultery and children are treated as furniture moved around to make the story work.

I was unable to watch this movie because it arrived broken. Such a disappointment because I was really looking forward to seeing it. Except for the big crack it looked like a brand new DVD.
