The Hollywood Knights (1980) Reviews

The Hollywood Knights (1980)

Fran Drescher, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tony Danza are the most notable aspects of this forgettable teen drama that features a gang of youths in a car club who decide to battle it out with the establishment in Beverly Hills. It seems their favorite haunt, the last drive-in restaurant in the neighborhood, has been forced to close. Their rebellion is marked by tactics that might be embarrassing to any serious rebels: they turn a high school banner into an X-rated statement, sabotage a police car, ruin a manicured garden, and urinate in a punch bowl. These shenanigans take place on Halloween in 1965, a time when practical jokes are usually in the hands of elementary school kids -- and that level of maturity is maintained here. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

I agree with the other reviewer that it's a combination of Animal House and American Graffiti. It's a very funny movie with a lot of adolescent humor that's still appealing.

I would characterize this movie as a good representation of the fun and mischief of high school “clicks” during the mid 1960s America. Set in Southern California during 1965, this hilarious film brings together some the raunchiness from Animal House and the heartfelt fun and tears from American Graffiti. Good storyline and fairly good acting. This film may not have ever been nominated for any award, but then again, who cares? It is a FUN and reminiscent adventure, well worth watching on a Saturday night. I’m glad Hollywood Knights has been released in DVD. My VHS version got wore out years ago!

Great movie for those "stuck in the 60's". As to the version on the DVD provided to me by Blockbuster Online.....the end of the movie......is not the same as I remembered when I viewed on TV several years ago......the ending may have been edited out or may be more than one version of some parts......but at the end of the Movie.....the police car had the rear end yanked out due to be chained to some stationary object (escapes my memory just what that object was)...... But still a GREAT movie for viewing......lots of laughs......

Definitely belongs on anyone's top ten list of all time. Hilarious from beginning to end. Excellent sound track, gorgeous cars and over the top pranks by a mischevious, fun loving group of high school teens easily makes this a movie you can watch over & over again and not get tired of. Do your self a big favor and see this soon! Favorite actor: Rober Whul, Favorite Actress: Michelle Phieffer, Favorite Prank: The 1 armed violinist, Favorite Car: Tony Danza's blown/supercharged 55 yello chevy, Favorite Tune: Tie - California Dreamin' & Under the Boardwalk

I loved this movie the first time I ever saw it on TV. Then, went out SEARCHING for it on DVD. The mischief of the club was great! The pranks, hazing of the new members, etc all made for great comedy. Newbomb Turk is my hero! The stuff they do with Dudley is hilarious! This movie has a lot of the pranks you hear about kids doing (heard about some similar ones from my folks). I know a lot of people would call it blasphemous, but I liked this movie quite a bit better than American Graffiti. Sorry Lucas...this movie is just more fun! I THINK this was Michelle Pfeiffer's first movie. It's great to see a lot of the bigger names of Hollywood "Way back When." Rent it....you definitely won't be sorry!

American grafiti was the movie that pulled the axle out of the cop car(great movie). For this movie if you were ever a cruiser or just hung out with a fun group of people at that time in your life, you'll probably enjoy this film. lets face it serious rebels never have a cause, us non serious types always seen to find one, and go about things all wrong(fun times). other than that steve p nailed it.

To quote another critic from years ago, "I gave this movie one star... because it was in focus." The gags were beyond juvenille (I've seen and enjoyed Porky's, Animal house, Am Graffiti, and others). The characters were really weak and one-dimentional, the writing formulaic and unrealistic, and the actors unbelievable (Robert Wuhl looked like he was 30- and maybe he was supposed to). And worst of all- it just wasn't funny. This pig stunk, and I want that 92 minutes of my life back...

This movie has not stood the test of time very well. First of all it models itself, not so discretely, after American Graffiti. The similarities are unavoidable. But what worked for A.G. falls flat and seems recycled in this one. The other aspect of this movie, the zany Teen Genre aspect, falls flat too. To be fair, it was probably funnier and more relevant in 1980 when it was made. But as it is, the jokes are to silly, childish and yes, zany; a word that rarely if ever means good humor... If a "zany" teen film is what you're after, I would recommend a variety of films instead of this one: Animal House and Fast Times At Ridgemont High come to mind right away. It isn't all horrible. There are some memorable lines. But you have to endure some fairly painful, zany, scenes to get to these memorable kernels. I just can't recommend it. -Sorry
