Helmed by director Uli Edel, this West German coming-of-age drama is the tale of an aimless teen-aged girl, played by Natja Brunkhorst. In search of kicks, Brunkhorst falls in with junkie/pusher Thomas Haustein. Christiane F boasts a generous chunk of concert footage featuring David Bowie. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Graphic portrayal of the often hopeless fight to overcome opiate addiction combined with an Excellent scene w/Bowie in concert. Director and writer not afraid to show the real side of addiction. Excellent rehab movie follows life of a very young addict living in Berlin projects is another environment vs.flawed individual theory. Shows how the loneliness of life for teens lead to drug abuse. portrays our isolation from one another. A subject often present in Bowie's songs, which play tho' movie. Expect real-life heroin addiction, ignorance and helplessness of parent on issue,no soft pedal, not for the family unless already addicted.

This is a remarkably well presented story of teenagers growing up in West Berlin, Germany during the 1980's. Christiane F. is the main character and it's the story of her struggle with a heroin addiction. I would recommend this movie for a more mature audience, because of the drug use and references throughout the movie. Soundtrack was done by David Bowie.

A very well cast, acted and directed tale that is just to gritty and believable for me to enjoy. I was moved but I would not watch it again.

I watched the movie back in the 80's when I was a young adult. It still did not loose any of it's impact. I tried to make my 20 year old watch it and she was not interested at all. I would recommend that older teenager watch the movie to see the danger in overestimation their own strength and following bad examples out of love or strong friendship.

The first time I saw this movie, I was a teenager living in Germany. I remember it making a serious impact on me and my attitude towards drugs. I rented it in the hopes of it making a similar impression on my teenager daughter, although the culture is a bit different today. I had forgotten how graphic the movie was.......but the message is hard-hitting, powerful, dark and truthful! The movie carries an R rating and that may be lenient for some scenes! I recommend you view the movie yourself before allowing teens to watch it! EVEN IF YOU ALLOW YOUR TEENS TO WATCH "R" MOVIES, DO NOT ALLOW YOUR THEM TO WATCH THIS MOVIE WITHOUT YOU..........AND BE WILLING TO ANSWER THEIR QUESTIONS!!!

I heard about this movie in the 90's but had a hard time finding it because the David Bowie soundtrack had made it somewhat of a cult classic. Perhaps it was too graphic for mainstream America, but I finally found it at a video store that specialized in rare, controversial, and hard-to-find films.Natja Brunkhorst is very believable as the 13-year-old heroin addict who would do anything to stave off the withdrawals. It's hard to believe this is based on a true story. If you thought the movies Pretty Baby (with a very young Brooke Shields) or Thirteen were controversial, you'll find yourself wondering why this movie wasn't banned in the U.S. because some of the scenes are very graphic. The cinematography is also dark and gritty, which only adds to the desperation and despair felt by a group of teens who've found themselves caught up in the sleazy underground world of addiction. It'll definitely open your eyes to a subject matter that most people don't feel comfortable talking about.
