Choose Me (1984)
Member Rating:
The lives of five L.A. natives intertwine in this romantic comedy from independent filmmaker and former Robert Altman protégé Alan Rudolph. Eve (Lesley Ann Warren) is a bar owner who has sworn off permanent commitments, seeking only the temporary sexual satisfaction of men. Her roommate Ann (Genevieve Bujold) is her polar opposite. In reality, Ann is secretly the radio sex therapist Dr. Nancy Love, but she has little romantic experience despite her profession. Into their lives comes Mickey (Keith Carradine), a recent mental patient who might be an enigmatic pathological liar. Though she's powerfully attracted to Mickey, Eve's kept at arm's length by her lover Zack (Patrick Bauchau), a married man whose wife (Rae Dawn Chong) also finds Mickey irresistible. When Nancy sleeps with Mickey, he proposes marriage, but she rejects him, though the assignation does have a positive effect on her radio show. Considered Rudolph's seminal work, Choose Me (1984) was the third in a thematically-linked trilogy from the quirky low-budget director, the first two being Welcome to L.A. (1977) and Remember My Name (1978). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Quirky? That's putting it mildly 007. An unexpected plot, often producing a distortion or perversion: a twist of fate; no less a story with a quirky twist. This movie is a pure study in entanglements. The more honest the lead character Mickey (Keith Carradine) tries to be, with all he comes in contact with in a web-of-lies nightlife environment, the more twists and turn-of-events evolve in the daylight. First of all I am a Leslie Ann Warren fan. Watch this movie closely to make sure you do not miss something due to something that jars the mind or emotions as if with a violent, unexpected blow. This film is under two hours but the artistic delivery uses such deliberate (slow) precision to deliver any forward (plot) dialog or motion, I found my self checking the runtime clock. (Interesting to note that the movie detail (description) did not make the connection Ann and Nancy being the same person). Best line: Zack: I'd rather hear the gun go off than listen to this sh--.

Great acting by all hands and a terrific twisty plot. Smoky film noir, each frame is like a museum piece. Music is great as well! An overlooked gem from the late 70's, you'll definitely love it.

If you like quirky movies, you've got to see this one. I love Genevieve Bujold. This movie has a cult following and its certainly NOT for folks who only like mainstream films. Lots of fun, and and interesting take on life and love. 5-STARS

If there was a point to this story, I missed it. I'm really not sure what it was about. However, I did notice that it was a poor attempt combining film noir with a quirky, too often rediculous story. Lesley Ann Warren plays a girl who can't say no. Genevieve Bujold plays the world's most inhibited woman until she meet Keith Carradine who plays a....... weirdo. Unless you like movies that are off-the-wall with no true plot, then I wouldn't bother.

First, the good; John Larroquette, Rae Dawn Chong, and Keith Carradine do a really good job in this movie. The character roles in this movie aren't believable, emotional responses of the characters are unrealistic, the story isn't compelling, and even the cinematography is cliched and dry. The movie left me feeling worn and tired for no other reason than the experience being heavy and dull. I rented this based on positive reviews . I didn't watch it alone and neither of us could find enjoyment in the film.

This movie did nothing for me. I just think it was too dated. Would not recommend. I like old movies, but the classics are what I appreciate. Thumbs down on this one!

I usually like quirky movies, but this one left me a bit cold. Loneliness, obsession and acceptance of violence are all part of this strange story. The film is oddly filmed. At times it's highly stylized and almost dreamlike, and at others, very realistic. All the characters are alienated from life in their own fashion, and all are searching for that elusive thing called love. And when the two main characters finally find "love," it leaves you with a queasy feeling that something's not quite right. I think an interesting movie could be made of Bujold's character.
