Legendary Hong Kong producer/director Tsui Hark and filmmaker Ching Siutung combine forces in this high-flying supernatural romance classic. Ning Caichen (Leslie Cheung) is a lowly tax collector who takes refuge for the night at the spooky Lam Ro temple. There he encounters and promptly falls in love with a beautiful ghost named Nie Xiaoqian (Joey Wang). Unfortunately Xiaoqian is damned to serve the evil hermaphroditic tree spirit Lao Lao, who (thanks to an extraordinarily long tongue) feasts on the souls of amorous young males. Usually Xiaoqian, along with her comely sister Qing, tempts would-be Lotharios to their arboreal doom, but she too is smitten with the downtrodden wanderer. Soon afterwards, Caichen meets Master Yan (Ma Wu), a Taoist hermit, martial arts master, and a sworn enemy of Lao Lao, who tells him of Xiaoqian's true, otherworldly nature. Nonetheless, true love proves to be strong. Caichen promises Xiaoqian that he will help spring her from her dubious employment and Xiaoqian protects her love from the evil wood sprite. Later, things grow more complicated for the lovers when they learn that Xiaoqian has been betrothed to a demon warlord. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

The movie is beautifully made. Subtle humor prevents the love story from being syrupy sweet. Very much liked by males as well as females in our family.

It is a fantastic-al story of love, friendship, good versus evil and oh yeah, Kung-Fu, demons and Magic. Totally awsome combination. It was one of the first DVD's I ever bought and I watch it again and again. Hilarious too.

It's one of the original great movies created from HK cinema!! Perfect casting!! Leslie and Joey Wong (Tsu Hsien) are like born for these roles!! I don't understand some of the negative comments posted here, but I guess they had some bad versions. The story is simple, which is a retelling of the oldest folk tale - a student meeting a ghosts in an old temple. However, everyone seem to be perfect with their roles, especially Joey Wong, who was stunning, and somehow the love story works. Also, the costume/set are very beautiful done, and special effect is very good, considering it's done in 1987 with 1/100th of Hollywood budget.

A beautiful bittersweet action romance (how often do you get to say that?), though those use to Hollywood slick FX and unversed in traditional Cantonese humor would probably not be amused, as several of these reviews seem to indicate. I, however, loved it and especially Joey Wong. The film that really open up the "golden age" of HK cinema for me. If you like this, check out the very similar and equally great Bride With White Hair. PS The captioning for this version is terrible.

I should have listened to Lia and ignored "Michael F"! This movie was so bad that there are not enough synonyms for “bad” to write a full review! It was a stupid premise, badly acted and mixed with "relegious" ideas so silly as to make the Horriscope look profound. The subtitles were VERY poorly done with MANY grammar and spelling mistakes.

This was so bad that I didn't even finish watching it. The subtitles did not match the action and often did not make sense. The story line was choppy, the special effects laughable, and the pasted-on beard on one character made me think this film must have been intended to be a spoof. Perfect for the now-defunct "Sci FI Theater", otherwise, don't waste your time.
