Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things (1972)
Member Rating:
In Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things, an above average slasher/horror film, a group of amateurs decide to experiment with witchcraft with deadly results. This film has a small cult following, due to some extent to the fact that one of the lead characters is played by writer and makeup effects artist Alan Ormsby. Ormsby gives one of the three or four most obnoxious screen performances in history as Alan, the leader of a troupe of actors who try out a voodoo ritual on a corpse only to find out that it has worked on all the corpses in the graveyard. The acting is terrible and the special effects are obvious and cheap, but the film somehow manages to overcome all of this and be quite entertaining, but only for those with strong stomachs. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi

...and me. My fiance, the anti-horror fan told me about this movie and watching it as a child. I expected the cheese factor, and it was certainly there, but it also delivered on atmosphere and down-right lunacy (what the main character does is inarguably insane). The music was, at times, overpowering, but still added to the film and the makeup was actually quite good. If you put yourself in the mindset of the era and a zombie genre film, and adjust your expectations from what is currently available for horror movies, I think you may enjoy. I did, and I'm a huge (current and past) horror and zombie flick fan.

I think I like this movie so much because it scared me when I was a kid.Now it seems a bit cheesy. But it still remains one of my all tim favorite zombie flicks.Oh,by the way Bob Clark is doing a remake i hear. This should be good.

Do not be fooled by the cover, there is absolutely no gore in this weak PG zombie flick. This has got to be directer Bob Clark's("Porkey's", "A Christmas Story") worst film ever. Zombies don't show up until the second half so you have to put up with Alan Ormsby's irritating performance. The movie is just dry all way round.-Stone

A cheesy and somewhat fun zombie fest. The overall tone seems to be very tongue-in-cheek, as in the form of a parody of the genre, especially since this came out a few years after the original, "Night of the Living Dead". It is very slowly paced and horribly filmed and acted but delivers a goofy, creepy, ghoulish atmosphere ala B movie style. Definitely not a good film but can be enjoyable and entertaining on some levels.

Amazingly awful - preposterous characters, putrid script, terrible acting and under-par makeup FX = FOR CHEEZ LOVERS ONLY! This flick was also an obvious influence on Evil Dead a few years later, so add another star for that!

I saw this as a kid and was freaked out by the ending. As teenagers, my friends and I had a sleepover EVERY time this was on Chiller Theater at 2 a.m. which was often. I don't know what I'd think of it if it didn't hold such sentimental value. Even though it's cheesy, the mood is creepy and zombies always freak me out.
