Director Mario Bava's second thriller revolves around a fashion salon owned by wealthy Cristina (Eva Bartok) and her greedy lover Max (Cameron Mitchell). The salon is a front for cocaine-trafficking and blackmail, so when model Isabella (Lea Kruger) is viciously strangled, leaving a detailed diary behind, many of the people connected with the salon become very nervous. Isabella's roommate Nicole (Arianna Gorini) finds the diary and soon has her throat clawed out with a piece of medieval armor. Peggy (Mary Arden), who borrowed abortion money from Isabella, is tortured and has her face pressed into a red-hot iron. The bodies continue to pile up until a conspiracy is exposed and the perpetrators start getting their just desserts. Luciano Pigozzi, Massimo Righi, and Claude Dantes are among the cast. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

I like movies such as this one. I find the color quality superb, very crisp and clear. The story is good. Be sure to watch on Disc 2 the differences in the European editing and the American editing. I found that to be very interesting on how they may view the same movie across the pond. Plus the clothes they were modeling for the fashion show really shows the age of the movie. But I really enjoyed it very much. ~ Susan L.

All of the models are so clueless. Don't they know what is going to happen. After a while, I would stop getting dressed for these people in the dressing room and hire my own private body guard. And never, never walk through the woods to get home! O.K., enough said. This is a good movie only because of the direction and the filmography, but the premise is pretty silly.

Blood and Black Lace is the only giallo film I've seen. Directed by Mario Bava, it is a triumph of style over substance. The plot revolves around a fashion house whose models house various secrets. When one is murdered and her diary is exposed, the other models start being murdered by a mysterious masked killer. The movie is shot with beautiful colored lighting and dreamy atmosphere. But don't be fooled. This is not light entertainment. The murders can be brutal. This movie does have one of my favorite chase scenes in a horror movie ever, though. I takes place in an antique shop and Bava paints the screen with surreal shades of green and purple. If you like slasher flicks, this movie will probably be to your taste. I don't like the killings that much but think the direction and lighting is superb. I bought it immediately after seeing it.

A great looking murder mystery that clearly laid the groundwork for later directors. DePalma in particular comes to mind. It has a fun, macabre sense of humor to go with some very effective tension. Considered a masterpiece by many, I can not quite go there, with the bad dubbing, some over the top acting, and a few silly twists. But that is not to say I didn't really enjoy it. Someone is killing models at a high fashion house, and there are plenty of suspects to go around. Bava's use of color is wonderful, if not quite up to his own "Whip and the Body", and there is also very effective use of shadows and moving lights. Yes, many of those devices are now visual cliches, but someone had to invent them, and Bava gets a lot of the credit.

While this is certainly not his best work, it's a must for all Bava fans to view this at least once. There's some good work put into this, and if you enjoy these old school Italian giallos then you'll enjoy this.
