Change of Habit (1969) Reviews

Change of Habit (1969)
Member Rating:
Dr. John Carpenter (Elvis Presley) helps the economically disadvantaged in an inner-city medical clinic. Three nuns are assigned to help out at the facility and are allowed to wear regular clothes instead of the traditional habits. Sister Michelle (Mary Tyler Moore) is the speech therapist who Dr. Carpenter would like to examine personally after hours. Along with the other sisters (Barbara McNair and Jane Elliot), Michelle is subjected to the criticism of the local parish priest (Regis Toomey) in the social experiment of non-traditional dress. Two spinsters even mistake the nuns for prostitutes without their habits. The priest wins out in the end, and the nuns must again don their habits. As the good doctor sings to the ailing children, Sister Michelle is transfixed both by a crucifix hanging on the wall and by Elvis Presley in an ironic and symbolic scene that flashes between the two icons. This was Presley's last studio feature and he welcomed the move from stifling screen images as he returned his focus to live performances and recording for the remainder of his illustrious career. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

This is one of Elvis' best performances--a far cry from his previous movies. It is rated G not R as is indicated by Blockbuster.

This is an excellent movie. (rated G, not R) Elvis is great in this more serious role. it shows what a great Actor he couldve been, had he chosen that as his main attention. I am not a big Elvis fan, nor am I catholic, but I really enjoyed this movie. Good story, very good acting. Rent this movie, you will not be sorry.

It was an enjoyable movie. It was one of my favorite Elvis movies and a great performance by Mary Tyler Moore. Also the plot was more serious than the past typical Elvis movies. Some of the language not suitable for young children.

Best Elvis Movie I have seen. This is a serious movie about inner city problems with only limited editing to carry a G rating. I would not really recommend for young children. Elvis plays a doctor at a city free clinic and is assigned three volunteer nuns as his only staff (Mary Tyler Moore is one of the nuns).

I know the was his last Movie, other then his concerts, but I truly believe it was one of his best. He showed great acting abilities in this film. He also still looked great

One of Elvis' best performances. The story line was a bit risque for the time it was filmed (1969) but it clearly shows today that had he been allowed to do "serious" roles he could have done them quite well. Of course, Mary Tyle Moore is terrific.
