The Champ (1979)
Member Rating:
Billy (Jon Voight) is on the road with his son T.J. (Ricky Schroder), fighting low-end boxing matches for drinking money before moving on to the next town for another match. When his ex-wife (and T.J.'s mother) Annie (Faye Dunaway) shows up, it's to tell him that she wants custody of the boy. She has remarried and has risen to social prominence in her community. She wants the same for T.J. Determined to keep his son with him, Billy decides to train properly in order to be a success instead of just a washed-up punching bag. This gorgeously photographed drama is a remake of the 1931 film, which won its star Wallace Beery an Oscar. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

The Champ is a classic excellent movie. Its Rocky before Rocky ever existed. Its motivating, inspiring, but also filled with more drama and heartfelt scenes than Rocky ever was in any of his films. REason being, little Ricky Shroeder who was a star kid in this movie. Few tearful scenes should be expected esp. the ending. Overall a great movie and they just dont make em' like this anymore.

Ricky Schroeder is unbelievable in this movie: pure, unreserved acting. I've never seen a child actor who played so genuinely and pull at my heartstrings like he did.

Ricky gave the performance of his life. Comparable to other great child actors. Voight and Dunaway superb.

The kid was awsome, almost brought tears to my eyes. You knew what was going to happen but it was still emotional to see how much this guy loved his son and how much his son loved him

My fiance has always told me what a good movie this was so, when I saw that the DVD had been released, I rented it to see why he liked it so much. I was not disappointed! The story is mostly predictable but still a great father/son story and little Ricky Schroder is awesome in this role. Watch it the first time for the story then rewatch it with the commentary by Voight and a then 30ish Schroder. It's very touching to hear the behind the scenes story of this movie. May be too sad for younger viewers.

One of the best, most touching movies ever made. A great job by all. Sad, keep the hanky close. Bob B.

Ricky Schroder is the only reason this movie gets ANY stars. Sports Illustrated listed it as one of the best boxing movies ever....considering that it has about 5 minutes of boxing at the very end of the movie...it was highly disappointing. Faye Dunaway's performance was highly disappointing also. You have to wade through alot of garbage to get to one good fight and the tear jerker ending... Overall, not worth it!

Ricky Schroder is terrific and Jon Voight is impressive in this period piece. Very sad ending, but joyful at the same time. One of my favorites over the years.

This is the best movie I've seen in a long time. One of the best rentals I've had on Blockbuster. I remember my parents renting this when I was a kid but I didnt remember what it was about. Ricky Shroeder gave an outstanding performance. I was extremely impressed. In this movie you see the faults of John Voight's character and at the same time you feel the love that he has for his son. I loved how his character developed.
