As fearless adventurer Jim Hawkins sets sail to a remote island rumored to house untold riches, enigmatic cook John Silver (Eddie Izzard) hatches a plan that puts the crew at odds with their determined leader in this swashbuckling take on Robert Louis Stevenson's beloved tale. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Much closer to the book than the Disney version, though it does stray from time to time. Overall, a grand adventure, with wonderful tropical and onboard-the-ship scenery. Long John's witticisms add much comic relief along the way. I really did not like how they turned Trelawney into a villain; thus a star and a half deduction.
This movie kept me up way too late last night. Didn't realize it was three hours ... and had to watch to the very end! Eddie Izzard made a great Long John Silver. It was true to the original Treasure Island, storywise, and true to what we know of pirate life, productionwise.
A new well done made for cable version of this Robert Louis Stevenson classic story.
Great locations in Ireland and Puerto Rico highlight this mostly faithful rendition. Eddie Izzard and Rupert Penny Jones (Whitchapel) with Elijah Wood comprise a good cast. Kudos to the film makers for using a ship built to resemble a ship of the time period, (the early 18th century). But the ship, The Espinola and Long John Silver's parrot are the ones who really steal the show. Executive producers Robert Halmi Sr and Jr have another hit one their hands with this one and the timeless message of Stevenson's story that greed leads to destruction and death is as true when he wrote it as it still is today.
My Grade: B+

Liked the movie, but it would have been really nice to have subtitles - much of the dialog was difficult to follow given the heavy accents used by the characters. The action and overall story was good though.
This was frustrating to watch because I couldn't understand half of what they were saying and there was no option of subtitles. If you have Eddie Izzard and a bunch of other thick-accented people in a movie, put the option of subtitles on the dvd.
