Excellent drama centering around the birth of the State of Israel. Kirk Douglas does an excellent job portraying Colonel Mickey Marcus and his effort to organize the Israel Defence Forces. Was this review helpful? Yes

How can a movie with Kirk Douglas, Yul Brenner, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Angie Dickinson, and Topol possibly suck? Ask Melville Shavelson. This movie is plodding, boring, and tries soooo hard to turn the real-life adventures of Malcolm McDonald into something interesting (albeit in the 138 minute kind of 1960's epic way). Total bomb. Save yourself the nightmare. There are a few good scenes, but the rest is woeful. Seems more like a movie from 1936 than one from 1966. Terrible special effects, fake Arabs, fake Jews. Awful in any religion. Was this review helpful? Yes

While the movie is quite long, it is definitely worth it! The movie chronicles Israel's struggle for independence and the American who helped them. Great acting by Kirk Douglas and wonderful cameos by Yul Brynner, John Wayne, and Frank Sinatra. Definitely worth watching! Was this review helpful? Yes

Even though I'm really interested in the Midddle East, I found this film disappointingly flat. The dialogue is stilted, artificial and cliche-ridden. Characters spout the corniest jokes, homilies and bromides with straight faces. The stereotypes are unbelievable-Israelis are Hora dancing fighter heroes. Arabs are either sheiks or schmucks. The British are mentally retarded and so on. Even the battle scenes are poorly staged and have a fake, cheaply done look. Kirk Douglas, however, demonstrates his chiseled features to good effect. I first saw this movie as a child, and ever since then I've been a staunch supporter of the State of Israel. Up from the ashes of the Holocaust rose the only true democracy in the Middle East which has lived under the biggoted microscope of world opinion. From day one of their existence, the Israelies fought for their very existence surrounded by hostile enemies whose hatred of Jews matches that of the Nazies who failed to eradicate them. This movie sets the stage for what will become the day to day struggle for this Jewish nation's survival. Don't mess with righteous Jews. You'll lose. Matt Colling Was this review helpful? Yes

Great movie and historical too. A true story about a real hero, but the ending was a little bit different from the facts, based on other accounts. This movie is a good sister movie to "Exodus," with Paul Newman. Glad we found it. Was this review helpful? Yes

It's amazing how realistic this film was without all the Hollywood
theatrics..nothing bombastic and fake looking..a tribute to the
raw founding of Israel..Kirk Douglas was superb as ever as was the
rest of the cast..it's interesting to watch Luther Adler as the head of the
proposed Israeli state when in the Desert Fox he plays the
antithesis, a somewhat misemotional Adolph Hitler...some range of
acting! The military scenes were spot on, you'd never know it was
a movie! The only weak part was at the end when an Israeli guard
fails to recognize Kirk Douglas and promptly shoots him..TSK TSK!!!
Anyway 3 stars! Was this review helpful? Yes
