Claudine (Diahann Carroll) is an impoverished African-American Harlem resident. Unmarried, Claudine supports herself and her six children by working as a maid--albeit secretly, so she can still qualify for welfare. Garbageman James Earl Jones falls in love with Claudine, and after strenuous effort manages to win the affections of her suspicious kids. Just when it seems as though there's a marriage in the offing, Jones runs off. Claudine's kids hunt him down and shame him into returning to their mother. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I first saw this movie in the theater when I was 10 years old. I loved it even then. A few years ago I had a flashback memory of the movie and just had to see it again. It didn't disappoint one bit! I still love this movie and ohh weee Mr. James Earl Jones' voice gives me chills whenever I hear it!

The song track made the movie. James Earl Jones showed dignity in his role. This movie showed how the system worked against the people who needed the most help.

For this to be made in 1974 I was shocked to see the nudity and to hear the language coming from the cast including the children! I did not enjoy the movie because I could not get past the language and nudity. Hopefully others can get past it, I couldn't.

I remember seeing this film as a little girl and just loving it. It still has the same effect on me as it did back then! I'm a single black mother, and even though my circumstances aren't they same as hers, I really can relate more to the film now. Awesome movie, awesome soundtrack - I think a must see!!!!

This movie was so realistic in it's depiction of single mothers during this time period, it's almost embarassing to watch. Much like Will Smiths performance in Persuit of Happiness, the viewer is forced to wonder how they would react in the shoes of James Earl Jones or Diane Carroll, who by the way, really is the finest struggling single mother I've seen, and I've seen too many. Hell this movie is worth your time for the soundtrack alone.

This movie is great when you want ot show the realities of life in the inner city and what a family has to go through to stay strong.
