A talented young woman is torn between her dreams and her family in this musical. Sparkle (Jordin Sparks) has been blessed with a beautiful voice and a gift for songwriting, but she's afraid to perform her songs in public, in part because her mother Emma (Whitney Houston), a former entertainer whose career brought her nothing but heartache, refuses to allow her daughters to sing outside of church. But Sparkle persuades her older sibling Sister (Carmen Ejogo) to sing one of her tunes at a talent show, and the reaction proves that Sister has star quality and Sparkle can write potential hits. An ambitious would-be manager, Stix (Derek Luke), persuades Sparkle and Sister to form a singing group with their sibling Dolores (Tika Sumpter), but while the act clicks wit audiences, the sisters have to contend with their angry mother, Sister gets caught up in a destructive relationship with a short-tempered comedian (Mike Epps), and Sparkle finds herself falling in love with Stix. Based on the 1976 musical of the same name, Sparkle proved to be the last major project for Whitney Houston, who died while the film was in post-production; it was also the first feature film for American Idol champion Sparks. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I think this was a good role for Whitney Houston to play in, her life was similar to this woman's except this woman did turn her life around for her daughters. It was a heart warming movie and a movie anyone would enjoy especially if they had struggles growing up in their lives. It's so sad this was her last movie and her life had to end. 3/17/13

Fill a room with parrots and typewriters and this story would come to be. Not a very good film, alas poor Ms. Houston, or should I say Whitney one note ? The sisters were fabulous though. If you have nothing better to do...

it was slow going, and lacking passion with all the actors. it picked up speed mid way of the movie. I loved the songs, but thin story line, and Whitney Houston was a bit blah

Enjoyed this as I was a fan of the Detroit sound. The gals in this flick are beautiful, sassy and talented and it was good to see Whitney Houston before she left us. Her one song was wonderfull, what a talent. Also thought the story was good, nicely cast.

It was a GOOD movie to watch, not just for the storyline, or struggles of female acts back in the day, but to see the final performance of (my) greatest artist, Whitney Houston. She played her role, supurbly, and at least a tribute to all Mothers, who put their children first. Yes, the storyline is similar to all the other music acts, but this one is different, in that the church mouse (Sparkle) gets her wish, the doctor pursues her dream, and Sister gets a second chance. It's a Ladies' story, because we overcome and move on, and reap the rewards on our terms.

A waste of time and patience was wasted on this film. There is not one single thing about Sparkle that is original. The music is uninspiring and a retread of every single song Beyonce, Christina Aguilera and W. Houston have ever released. The acting from a lot of the big names here were subpar. Sparkle is part 2 of _____________ (add name of every movie musical ever released). Do not waste your time and more importantly your hard earned money. Look at the movie poster under MOVIES SIMILAR TO SPARKLE. That's Dreamgirls! The movie posters are EXACTLY the same. I give this movie TWO THUMBS DOWN.

I'm a fan of the 1976 original, despite it being awash in 1930s showbiz cliche - the cast and the Curtis Mayfield score still made it a WOW. A remake, I figured, wasn't a bad idea, since the original WAS improvable, and it would be a great platform for showcasing new stars. As to the latter, Miss Jordin Sparks SHINES...she's sweet, beautiful, and WHAT A VOICE!!! And, of course, our Miss Whitney is here, she's excellent, and has one last song to sing for us (I cried. I'm sorry, but I DID). Several of the Curtis Mayfield songs come along for the ride (but somehow don't sound as good this time). And the cliched storyline is even tougher to endure than in '76. But see it for Jordin and, even more, see it for Whitney. Miss you SO much, girlfiend.
