A young surfing prodigy enlists the expertise of an old pro in order to conquer a truly epic wave in this drama detailing the incredible true story of surfer Jay Moriarity (Jonny Weston). A Santa Cruz teen with a natural born talent for surfing, Moriarty can't resist the temptation to conquer the mountainous Mavericks surf break. Moriarty realizes that his lack of experience could spell doom while attempting such a formidable feat, so in order to ensure that he's well prepared he seeks the wisdom of veteran surfer Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler). Meanwhile, as Hesson teaches Moriarty how to stay balanced and focused in the face of danger, the two surfers establish a close bond that gives them the strength to face any challenge. This movie is based on a true story of a boy that has a passion, and a gift, to become one of the world's best surfers through the struggles and challenges of a mother who is checked out on alcohol most of the time and a father who leaves him early in life. He hooks up with a crotchity neighbor who is an amazing surfer who eventually takes him under his wing to teach him to surf. He pushes him to face fears and learn things from the ground up and to work for what he wants. This is an amazing story and kids and families should watch this!

Powerful, Courageous and Heartfelt Movie. I really enjoy watching True Stories and watching this young man's journey was very inspiring and amazing. Seeing a young male grow up without a father and alcoholic mother and see the connection he forms with his next door neighbor and seeing him mentor this boy into a man. It's inspiring to know that there is good people out there and the impact they can have on someone. Loved this movie!!!

Man, what can I say about this movie that other reviewers haven't said already. Probably one of the best films that I have ever seen. So, so, so powerful, deep in to the human spirit, and it is a true story, which is the most incredible thing of all. Wow, just an emotional and excellent movie. A great film for everyone. It makes you want to the best at everything in your life, your career, your family, every aspect of your life. 100% recommend this movie!

This movie is not the prequel to Top Gun. It is not the sequel either. It is about surfing. It has a lot to do with Top Gun so if you like Top Gun you will like it. There is music and danger and they live life on the edge like in Top Gun but no one is named Goose. So watch it but it is not about Top Gun. It is not about a basketball team from Dallas either and it is not about Top Gun.
